Vaughan & Chiang's "Paper Girls" Builds a Familiar Yet Disconcerting World
TriStar Pictures packed a one-two punch for Neill Blomkamp fans: In addition to releasing this new poster for the IMAX presentation of Elysium, the studio also unveiled a new trailer that explains a bit more of the film’s plot.
As we saw in the previous trailer, Matt Damon’s Max De Costa lives on Earth in 2154, which isn’t such a great deal. While he and others like him struggle to survive on a ravaged, overpopulated world, the wealthy live privileged lives on Elysium, a perfect city orbiting the planet, packed with beauty and cancer-killing machines. For some reason, Max needs to get up to the city, so he asks a freedom fighter to graft a kind of exoskeleton to his body that will allow him to fool their systems.
The new trailer fills in a lot of the back story and gives us a better idea of De Costa as a character. Now we know about his thieving past and that he needs to get to Elysium because he had an accident at work that will kill him in days. Plus, you get to see more of Jodie Foster as Secretary Delacourt and Sharlto Copley as the villainous, exosuit-wearing Kruger.
Like his previous effort District 9, Blomkamp wrote Elysium and also directed. The film is scheduled for an Aug. 9 release.
