Captain America’s New Suit Seen on Set of The Winter Soldier

captain america-new costume2

As Captain America: The Winter Soldier wrapped two weeks of filming Friday on Cleveland’s West Shoreway, onlookers were treated to their first glimpses of the Sentinel of Liberty’s new costume, previously only seen in concept art. The Plain Dealer was, of course, on hand to snag photos.

As you can see, that’s not Chris Evans on the motorcycle, but rather a stunt double. As such, the costume isn’t exactly like the one the star will wear; it’s loose-fitting, and probably not as detailed.

Directed by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, the film also stars Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Falcon), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Toby Jones (Arnim Zola), Frank Grillo (Crossbones), Max Hernandez (Agent Jasper Sitwell) and Robert Redford (Alexander Pierce). Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens April 4, 2014.

So they’re basing it on the SHIELD agent costume from a few years ago? Look, I agree that the Avengers costume was lacking, but I’d hoped that they would have just tweaked out the errors, not replaced it with a largely monochrome suit. Bleah.
Unless this is a “specialty” suit for a single scene. Then I take it back.

  • bryan david

The Avengers suit got wrecked so maybe this is just something he throws together for the movie…I really hope they use the Batroc fight scene form the comic when they are brawling and flipping on cars cars down the highway…

  • CudaBiro

The costume’s definitely an improvement, but I can’t help but feel that it needs more red and white.

  • fearitself

Is the movie still called Captain America? Are you sure it’s not Captain Toneddown or Captain Starsaretoocorny?

I swear this screams Captain America as much as a microwave. Bravo! Now he will surely fit into the modern world. No one will complain that his costume is too cheesy.

  • Jack

Looks more militaristic rather than the superhero getup he wore in The Avengers. Good move, I say, even though I love the original costume. It makes sense that Cap would wear a different suit when doing his thing with SHIELD, more black-ops shit.

  • weenus

That’s basically the “Steve Rogers: Super Soldier” costume. Maybe he’ll only use it at parts throughout the film?

    For reference:

  • LightningBug

I hope this doesn’t mean that his more traditional suit wont be in the film as well. It makes sense for him to have a less loud getup for when he’s trying to go a little bit more under the radar on certain missions. Hopefully that’s what we’re seeing here.

  • Eric Wayne Norlander

This suit is a ploy to allow Chris Evans more time without the mask on.
Don’t let these pics fool you. He’ll spend more time looking like Steve Rogers, Super-Soldier, rather than Captain America…
Maybe by Avengers 2 we’ll get a better Cap suit. I agree that it needed some important design tweaks, but this is not the way to go this early in the franchise.

  • Lead Sharp

At least it’s from the comics, sigh.

  • David Oliver Burcham

Looks like a jacket one would wear riding a motorcycle in a cold environment to me.

  • Daaarn

I’m okay with the suit in general, but I agree that it needs a little bit more red and white.

  • BatKen

Agreed. Why is it that these actors can’t seem to wear their masks (or
helmet in Thor’s case) the whole time they’re fighting in costume? It
seems that only Nolan/Bale understood that in the Batman trilogy.

  • David Fullam

I cannot wait for this to get here.

  • Chuck777

Becaise the masks are, let’s be honest here, kind of goofy and not necessary for the character in the way the cowl is for Batman.

  • Chuck777

Needs more colors. Even some different shades of blue would be nice.

  • Troy Younger

    Check it out! Ears!

I like the darker blue, but there was no need to get rid of the strips. Btw, this suit looks very much like something Steve Rogers wore while Bucky carried the shield and name of Captain America.

  • chai xiong

    that is just hideous.

  • Arc Lang

At least they got the helmet right

  • jamie douglas

    those god damn ears.

  • BatKen

Cap’s helmet is to protect his head in a fight, as is Iron Man’s and Thor’s metallic helmet. Spidey’s is to protect his identity. So yes, their head gear is as important as Batman’s.

  • thesnappysneezer

    Horrible, just horrible. Needs RED

  • Jason

Some of the comments show a clear lack of having actually read the article, “As you can see, that’s not Chris Evans on the motorcycle,
but rather a stunt double. As such, the costume isn’t exactly like the
one the star will wear; it’s loose-fitting, and probably not as

Let’s wait for the movie people!

  • ShavontiLewis

They have a use in-universe, but the real reason is that the studios don’t want their stars faces obscured for most of the film so they find ways to get around that. This is especially true for Spider-Man who’s entire face is completely covered when he’s in costume. Bale’s Batman is still noticeably Bale, but notice how much of the film he spends out of costume altogether.
