Johnny Depp’s ready to get Mad again. The Pirates of the Caribbean and Lone Ranger actor is keeping it in the Disney family, signing on to reprise his role as the Mad Hatter for the studio’s Alice in Wonderland sequel.
The news comes in a Deadline report about Depp’s recent box-office struggles (most notably the poor performances of The Lone Ranger and last year’s Dark Shadows). Despite those troubles, Depp is apparently set for “a ‘new’ multi-year first look deal at Disney to develop film projects he can produce there,” and one of those projects includes a sequel to Alice in Wonderland. But original Wonderland director and frequent Depp collaborator Tim Burton won’t return for the follow-up; The Muppets director James Bobin is the man for that job.
It’s no surprise that Disney wants to return to Wonderland, as the studio scored more than $1 billion worldwide for the first movie. With Depp officially on board for part two, it shouldn’t take long for more news to trickle out about further casting, and production start and release dates.
