Shailene Woodley Discusses Departure From ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’

Mary Jane Watson is gone from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, despite the fact that actress Shailene Woodley was cast in the role and filmed multiple scenes for Sony’s superhero sequel. Director Marc Webb explained that MJ from the film “to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship.” According to a new interview, Woodley is more than satisfied by that logic.

“She was only going to be in four scenes,” she tells Empire. “I think it’s really incredibly smart that she’s not in it, looking back at it now, because they’re introducing so many characters and MJ is such a vital character that it makes sense to hold off for future movies to introduce her.”

Rumor has it that Woodley won’t play Mary Jane at all now, with the role recast in a future Spider-Man movie. Even if we never see her take on the character, Woodley at least got to speak Mary Jane’s famous line, “Face it, tiger, you just hit the jackpot.”

“I did say it,” she laughed.

Opening May 4, 2014, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, Paul Giamatti, Colm Feore and Sally Field. Webb, Garfield, Foxx and DeHaan will appear today at Sony’s Hall H Presentation at Comic-Con International in San Diego.

Gives me hope that Gwen will survive this movie.

  • hollowprince665

Nope. Gwen will die in this one and the MJ and Peter relationship will develop and blossom in 3 and 4. Thats my guess though. Having MJ in this movie might have removed attention from the heartbreak.

“Face it, Tiger, I looks like I hit the crack pipe.”

  • Shokdiesel

Was she cut because they weren’t happy with her casting? It doesn’t bode well for the plot if they swoop in and cut characters after filming. How much of a mess is this film?

  • hatersgonnahate

i guarantee at least part of the reason why she was cut was because of internet haters like penguintruth.

  • Kreatous

Even more of a mess than the first one.

I understand the logic behind introduce MJ in the first place. One of the best parts of the original gwen stacy story was the epilogue with MJ. But it would hard to develop two strong on screen relationships with one or two movies, without diminishing the other.

I’m not worried about the cuts because it always seemed like she had a small role any way. I hope Shailene Woodley returns for 3.

I get the feeling there’s something we’re not hearing about. I find it hard to believe they would completely cut her character based purely on narrative. Since when do these films care about narrative?!

  • anon

“Incredibly smart”. Wow, sad that a great actress has to suck up to her bosses publicly like this. I guess she’s worried that they’ll pick a different MJ for the third movie.

  • Daniel Sadler

Not pretty enough for MJ, sad but true.

  • coalminds

Find someone prettier for the recast.

You don’t know Hollywood very well or the film industry if this surprises you. I know of many actors that had their entire scenes cut out where it didn’t affect the movie’s story-line at all. The wonders of editing.

  • spiderylover

They still doing Amazing movies???? boooo more like amazing crap.

  • Lawg Skrak

    lol awesome.

  • AJ

Absolutely. MJ is supposed to be model material. So cast a model. Or Rose Leslie – Ygritte from Game of Thrones.

Edit: Turns out Shailene Woodley was a model. Still not who I see as MJ.

  • AJ

I avoided the previous one because I just couldn’t stomach another Spider-Man reboot so soon, but having caught it on TV recently, I have to say the leads did an excellent job, and the direction wasn’t without humanity.

  • Daniel Sadler

    Ygritte would be sweet!

  • Max

Am I the only one who keep feeling disappointed by this movie the more you hear about it? They don’t even try to control the spoilers that goes on the set! Ever since after seeing the first amazing spider-man film I washed my hands from any hope of seeing an enjoyable project like the old spider-man movies.
