SDCC | Marvel Contends ‘There’s Nothing to Announce’ About Vin Diesel

vin diesel avengers 2 Marvel Studios President Kevin Fiege and Fast and the Furious star Vin Diesel seem to disagree on when, or even if, we’ll be hearing news about the actor’s addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Diesel first mentioned a meeting with Marvel in late June before teasing a role a few weeks later with a photo of himself in front of the cover for The Avengers #2. The actor was a little more evasive about the project during the Riddick panel at Comic-Con International, saying, “That’s the one question I’m not supposed to say anything on. I will say there is some very big news coming at the end of this month.”

Afterward, Diesel talked to MTV, which did its best to coax more information out of the star. After commenting on the company’s extensive library of characters, Diesel dropped some knowledge about a certain android Avenger. “I mean, there’s two Visions, for the record,” he said. “And people know one was created by Ultron, one was created by Proctor, as you know, if you follow …”

Then he backpedaled, saying, “No, but I’m not mentioning that character! I’m not mentioning that character, I was just saying there are 8,000 characters, and I gave an example of how one character might have two different versions!”

Meanwhile, Feige told The Huffington Post, “There’s nothing to announce with Vin,” saying there will be no news on that front revealed next month at Disney’s D23 Expo.

“It’s so far ahead it may not even exist,” he said. “So, there’s nothing to announce. But, I love Vin and he’s an amazing personality. Look how much attention he’s gotten for a meeting. He’s incredibly shrewd. He’s got a Riddick movie that I can’t wait to see. And the Fast and Furious franchise, in addition to Vin, is a franchise I admire a lot for turning the sixth and next year the seventh into the biggest and most popular one. As far as a piece of it? Could some day we do a Luke Cage: Hero for Hire in that kind of vein. Totally.”

So, who do you believe? Is Diesel jumping the gun a bit on his announcement of an announcement? Is Feige playing it all close to the vest, not wanting to ruin an upcoming reveal? Or is it a big case of miscommunication?

I think this will be much ado about nothing. Mostly ginned up by Vin to draw attention to his Riddick movie.

  • Andy Synn

It’s definitely either much ado about nothing, or no smoke without fire.

    One of the two.

  • demoncat_4

feige is doing what he always does keeping things close to the vest and having fans go nuts trying to figure out who vin disel is going to play vision or maybe ultron now/ so they will be either shocked or go yes figured it out when vin and marvel officialy reveal who he is . and from the way he back tracked odds are more and more he is the vision.

  • tony macaroni

He’ll probably be the ‘Voice’ of Ultron. Maybe the same as whatshisname did with Hulk, be the model for the CGI character

  • darksparkimus

I freaking hate people who use the term “playing it close to the vest”. We all saw “The Dark Knight” people…

  • Liborio Flores

I would not mind him doing motion capture and the voice of Ultron.

  • andrew11

I’m really curious to see what, if anything, he’ll be playing. I just don’t see him as the Vision. In fact, I really don’t see Avengers 2 having Vision at all, actually. If they can do Ultron without Pym, then they really don’t need Vision either.

If they’re saying he was discussing multiple pictures, then I would guess it’d be Thanos.

  • War0321ssu

Wonderman Would be a better fit for him.

  • Orphan

Feige has no options here after Diesel and crew delivered big time with the recent Fast and Furious.I’m sure the guy is dollar sensible enough not to take this as a dismissal. It’s unfortunate that any Marvel project has to come after another Riddick movie.Projects like Riddick can put you a the top of the charts or make you the next Ryan Reynolds.

  • bleh

Benidict Cumberbach would be a good ulton, but might be one too many posh A.I voices with jarvis thrown in the mix.

  • Happily LS

I’m pretty sure the phrase is “playing it close to the CHEST.” lol.

  • PietroMaximoff

    what’s a Proctor?????????????????

  • ValeriaKementari

so Avengers 2 end-credits will have the reveal of this dude as Vision? Cool.

  • Terence Bradshaw

It’s marketing, plain and simple. Both of them know they’re negotiating something. The negotiations are ongoing but both know they’ll (most likely) be successful. In the meantime, since neither can say something definitive, they’re both taking advantage of the mystery to create buzz.

  • DarthTigris

He’s Thanos to me. Just look at that chin!

Vision would be a waste. Vin needs an iconic villain role already. Can’t believe it’s taking this long for him …

  • vpuik

I don’t see Marvel changing actors for Thanos after GotG.

  • andrew11

Has Thanos been cast? Has it even been confirmed that he’s in it?

I would bet that if Diesel’s multi-picture deal is for Thanos, then most of those movies will just be cameos in GotG, Thor 2, Avengers 2…

  • vpuik He’s confirmed, but not cast so it might still be him. I thought there had already been some talk about casting.

    Confirmed list would be:

Feige introduced James Gunn and cast members Michael Rooker (Yondu), Karen Gilliam (Nebula), Djimon Hounsou (Koraf), Lee Pace (Ronan the Accuser), Benicio Del Toro (The Collector), David Bautista (Drax the Destroyer), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), and Chris Pratt (Star-Lord).

  • mike payton

I doubt they could afford him. They probably wanted to hire him for minimum wage like they do everyone but RDJ and he has enough going on not to accept the low offer. RDJ only gets what he gets from Ol’ Scrooge McMarvel because even they know that the Avengers franchise is DOA without him.

  • thanos0145

Disney’s D23 Expo is next month, so they’ll probably announce the casting news there.

  • Rod Townsend

    Vin Diesel
    Squirrel Girl

  • Shawn

Marvel needs to stop being so coy and cutesy. The fans are going to be talking, and alot of what they guess is going to be right. So when the actual announcement is made, it’s going to fall flat, because it’s either exactly what fans have been saying, or it’s nowhere near as out there as some of the things being guessed. Remember Star Trek and “John Harrison”?? By the time he was revealed as Khan, entire theaters full of people were saying “Well DUH!!!!”

  • isit

“Far off and might not exist.” Marvel has been trying to get Galactus and SS back. Diesel teased a romance. My dollar is Vin is Norrin Radd.
