The Matrix actor has not one, but two martial arts-based films debuting this year: He pulled double duty on Man of Tai Chi as director and star, but he’s starring as Kai in Carl Rinsch’s 47 Ronin, which has been in the works for years. While Tai Chi doesn’t yet have a U.S. release date — it opened earlier this month in China, Indonesia, the Philippines and Singapore — 47 Ronin has a solid Dec. 25 date.
To start getting people excited for Risch’s supernatural actioner, Universal Pictures revealed the film’s monster-filled first trailer, along with four posters featuring Reeves and his fellow castmates. Feast your eyes on the trailer below, or watch it in HD at Apple.
Keanu Reeves makes an explosive return to action-adventure in 47 Ronin. After a treacherous warlord kills their master and banishes their kind, 47 leaderless samurai vow to seek vengeance and restore honor to their people. Driven from their homes and dispersed across the land, this band of Ronin must seek the help of Kai (Reeves)—a half-breed they once rejected—as they fight their way across a savage world of mythic beasts, shape-shifting witchcraft and wondrous terrors. As this exiled, enslaved outcast becomes their most deadly weapon, he will transform into the hero who inspires this band of outnumbered rebels to seize eternity.
47 Ronin also stars Rinko Kikuchi (Pacific Rim), Hiroyuki Sanada (The Wolverine), Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Revenge, Mortal Kombat), Tadanobu Asano (Thor) and tattooed model Rick Genest.
