Marvel Won’t Announce New Phase Three Films Until ‘a Year From Now’

Marvel Studios is keeping a lid on the third phase of its cinematic universe.

Even as rumors swirl about Doctor Strange, Black Panther and other projects, studio President Kevin Feige tells Collider to count on one thing and one thing only: absolutely no confirmation on the studio’s post-Ant-Man plans until 2014.

“I think it would probably be, at the earliest, a year from now,” he said about when fans can expect additional movie announcements. “It’s only 2013 now.”

Feige said he and his team are wholly focused on what’s directly in front of them: Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Age of Ultron. And fans can expect something special regarding that slate of films when Marvel appears next month at Disney’s D23 Expo.

“Totally,” Feige said when asked if Marvel fans need to pay attention to the event. “It’s a unique, big and important Disney corporate event.”

Let’s hope we finally get a solo movie with a female lead and a Hawkeye (& Mockingbird) movie when they eventually announce them.

Doctor Strange, Black Panther and Inhumans are the most likely new properties. Captain America 3, Thor 3, and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will all figure in depending on the success of the upcoming predecessors. I wouldn’t mind a Hulk sequel, either.

It’s all leading into Avengers 3, which we know now will have Thanos as the primary antagonist. Presumably at least one film in Phase 3 will explicitly lead into Avengers.

As much as I’d like Hawkeye to break out on his own, I think it’s unlikely. I wouldn’t be surprised if he did a cameo on the SHIELD tv show. His current comic book series might make great inspiration for short bonus films like “Item 47.”

The biggest creative question at Marvel is how and where to fit in films that have no real or obvious relationship with the Avengers. When will they introduce a Marvel film that stands 110% on its own? Cap and Thor are decent films, but there’s no question that their success is helped by audiences knowing it all connects to the big Avengers movie.

It depends on the box office performance of GotG, Thor and CA sequels on weather they’ll be part of the phase three film slate. So I can see the reason to hold off until next year to announce the phase three line up. But that being said I believe the front runner for phase three will be Dr. Strange. Due to some statements Fiege has made about exploring the supernatural corner of Marvel comics in the MCU.

Why hasn’t Quentin Tarantino already called dibs on a Power Man & Iron Fist movie? His two favorite genres are blaxploitation and kung fu. It’s a no brainer!
