Mark Strong, Bryan Cranston Rumored For Lex Luthor in ‘Man of Steel’ Sequel

When it comes to director Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel sequel, most of the speculation is focused on Batman. Who will play the Caped Crusader? How much will Snyder’s take on the character really be influenced by Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns?

But there’s another probable player entering the DC Cinematic Universe, according to recent buzz: Lex Luthor, Superman’s most recognizable adversary — and rumors are already ramping up about who will play the deadly villain.

In an interview with Digital Spy, actor Mark Strong was asked about the possibility of playing Lex Luthor. His answer wasn’t confirmation, nor was it a denial. “All I can say is … watch this space,” he said.

That’s a needlessly cryptic response if Strong has nothing to share. Then again, Strong knows the superhero and fandom game well by now, having played Sinestro in Green Lantern and Frank D’Amico in Kick-Ass. It’s entirely possible Strong is just having fun with the scoop-hungry crowd.

The Strong rumor comes shortly after a different Luthor report. On Wednesday, Latino Review’s El Mayimbe tweeted not-so-subtle hints that Snyder and Warner Bros. are eyeing Bryan Cranston for Lex.

As the Man of Steel sequel prepares for a 2014 production start, answers on who will play Batman and Lex Luthor (if he’s involved in the film) should come sooner rather than later.

Christopher Meloni would have been an awesome Lex Luthor.

So are we getting Man of Steel 2 and Superman/Batman or is Superman/Batman Man of Steel 2? I’m a little confused.

  • Kabuce

Billy Zane should be Lex Luthor, he has the ability to be both sincere and ruthless, and these days he looks a little like Lex from Superman: TAS.

  • Rollo Tomassi

MoS2 and BvS are the same film. This is the sequel.

  • Shallbecomeabat

Why do people always name Zane for this. Is that an internet meme or joke I don’t get? It HAS to be.

  • Keith Lindow

I always thought S:TAS Lex reminded me of Billy Zane. He was a fan choice back in the day when WB spent over 10 years trying to get a Superman movie off the ground.

I prefer Faran Tahir for the role. He deserves a more prominent part than he’s been getting in his recent films, and he looks a lot more like Lex than Bryan Cragface; I mean, Cranston. Save Cranston for the Jim Gordon role, and Mark Strong as Sinestro. Seriously, there’s no need to just abandon the (current) GL franchise, especially when Sinestro is just now donning the yellow ring.

    Wayne Brady

  • Rollo Tomassi

LOL at Wayne Brady throwing his own name out for consideration. He can play Batman.

  • Tom Ferriday

Who in the Hell is El Maybe or whatever his name is and why should anyone care? How does he have any credibility?

  • Miles Jones

which is kinda premature, seeing as to how they didnt establish Clark and Superman enough yet, they should have gon for a straight up Superman sequel, not with batman. this is just rushed to compete with avengers 2.

  • Miles Jones

Too bad he has terrible range as an actor.

  • Miles Jones

    he doesn’t, what a clown.

  • Happily LS

Mark Strong isn’t bad, but he’s played a bald villain so many times, it’s kind of played out. I feel like I already know how every line would sound coming out of his mouth. He doesn’t have the depth of someone like Bryan Cranston. Of course, if the MoS reviews are to be believed, Bryan Cranston is too good for the part.

How about No Lex at all? Granted MOS has it’s flaws but let’s move on to another villian in MOS 2 more in keeping with the cosmic approach of Zod such as Brainiac. Lex is too vaudeville

  • Max

    Billy Zane For Lex Luthor!

  • BoilingMan

Bryan Cranston all the way!!! Mark Strong isn’t even in the same league.
