Mark Wahlberg Wants a Shot at Marvel’s ‘Iron Man’ Franchise

Film Title: Contraband

While in the United Kingdom promoting one comic-book adaptation, 2 Guns, Mark Wahlberg revealed he’s ready to take on another.

“I would like to take over the Iron Man franchise for Robert Downey,” he told Yahoo! Movies UK, “[but] it’s one of those things where I kind of like playing real people, [so] I’ve never been asked.”

Downey, who earned $50 million for The Avengers alone, signed a deal in June to appear in its two sequels but not in a potential fourth Iron Man movie. That means if Marvel Studios is interested in continuing its founding franchise, it’ll probably be shopping for a new Tony Stark around 2017 or so. Wahlberg is 42 now, about the same age Downey was when Iron Man began filming in 2007.

Wahlberg, who was reportedly offered the lead in the long-brewing Crow remake, had a brush with another comic-book property long before he was cast in 2 Guns: He apparently was among the names considered for the role of Robin in Joel Schumacher’s 1995 film Batman Forever, a part that ultimately went to Chris O’Donnell.

“Somebody dodged a bullet!” the actor joked. Asked whether he could’ve pulled off that snug costume, Wahlberg replied, “I ain’t wearing no tights man.”

Battle armor is another matter entirely.

uhm… no. I like Marky Mark, but i can’t see him as Tony Stark.

  • PK

Wahlberg would be a good fit for several Marvel characters. But Tony Stark really isn’t one of them.

I could see him as Daredevil, Hawkeye (if Renner leaves), maybe Iron Fist, Bucky Barnes (if that wasn’t already cast)…

  • akkadiannumen

HAHAHAHAHAH!!! Snort… I love you Mark but hell no!!

  • 0bsessions

Honestly, not sure I can see any of them either. I’m having a lot of trouble pegging him. I could see him as Superior Spider-Man as he plays smug really, really well.

You know who he’d nail come to think of it? Namor. Seems a bit old to hold the part, but I could really see him as Namor. Maybe Dr. Strange.

  • runner_j

Yeah, there’s no way that would work. Frankly, there’s not one Marvel character I could see him playing.

  • dekko

Hmmm …. Maybe Wonder Man. I think I can see that – especially since Marky Mark tends to play guys with a sensitive side.

  • Sorrymark

    No.

  • Ok

No… and I would like to be the president. Just, not suave enough.

  • Kenny Pick

    Worst idea ever.

  • Greg

“Say ‘hi’ to your mother for me”

  • Feliciano Mora

Holy crap, yeah he COULD pull off Namor, couldn’t he?

Dr. Strange though I’ve actually read somewhere was being led towards Christian Bales’s direction.

Iron Fist is something close to Ray Park’s heart. I asked him about it earlier this year at a convention, and he is very very gung ho to do it. But it’s been in development hell for a while.

  • John Hoban

    Hell…no. MAYBE Boomerang….

  • John Hoban

Michael C. Hall should be Daredevil.

  • Masked Man Issue 1

Because when I think about ridiculously smart Tony Stark, I think of Mark Wahlberg saying “Hey donkey, say hello to your mother for me, okay?”… uh, no.

  • Froinlaven

    No.

  • Mastadge

So the guy who, when offered the role of Kirk’s father in Star Trek, “tried to read the script and I didn’t understand the words or dialogue or anything,” thinks he can take the reigns from fast-talking Robert Downey? Further, this vortex of anti-charisma and poor acting thinks it would be a good idea to take a role where that body of which he’s so proud is often replaced by a suit, leaving him to do all his acting with his face?

  • Anubis

I like Ray Park but I think Scott Adkins would fill the role of Iron Fist a lot better. Then pair him up with and even more muscled up Michael Jai White for a Heroes for Hire movie.

  • andrew11

Of course he wants to take over the role. RDJr is one of the highest paid actors precisely because of his role as Iron Man. Any leading actor would want to give years of their lives for that kind of dough.

But sorry, ain’t happening. At least I hope not. He’s a one-note actor, and all wrong for Tony Stark.

I like Jon Hamm. 5 years ago, comic fans wouldn’t have been surprised to see him get the role, and he would offer a different take on Tony Stark – suave and witty, but also a lot less manic.

  • Ricky Cooley

I would much rather someone that is an actor first play Iron Fist/Danny Rand. Ray Park can’t act worth a damn and he looks nothing like Danny Rand. Scot Adkins also wouldn’t be good for the role. You’ve got to get someone with that rich playboy look then worry about teaching them how to fight. Justin Hartley, who played Green Arrow in Smallville, has always been my choice to play Iron Fist. He’s got the look, he’s young enough, his acting is better than Ray Park and Scott Adkins who are just stuntmen, and he already has some training under his belt.

  • Snipe

I could see him as a great Moon Knight though.

  • Uncle Woofie

I can see Mark Wahlberg as Tony Stark. Why?
Every appearance of the character as we’ve seen Downey play him for so long and so well, suggests someone whose adventures & challenges that three Iron Man movie plots, and “The Avengers” exposed “Tony Stark” to, have resulted in accelerating the character’s “maturity curve”.
Unlike the “re-boot” example of Batman, Marvel’s tradition of a “linear” inter-connected “universe” means that only those movies that were found lacking in serious ways (we’ve had THREE actors successively play Bruce Banner in three movies for example, serious miscasting of crucial “Daredevil” supporting characters, as well as a butchering of the F.F.’s origin story) are going to be “re-booted” to one degree or another, if at all.
Also, remember that no one thought (including ME) that Michael Keaton would pull off the Bruce Wayne/Batman character as well as he did either.
Mr. Wahlberg’s acting chops have grown to the point that with a little “make-up work” we would be treated to an older, wiser, more experienced Tony Stark in the inevitable “Iron Man IV” sequel with a more “matured” sense of sarcasm & humor, reflected in his looks as well as his actions, by the time Robert Downey Jr. finally decides it’s time to hang up his boot-jets on the far side of the Avengers sequel.

  • Danny

I can believe that RDJ can come across as genius. MW…nope. That’s like Denise Richards nuclear physicist kind of casting.

  • Happily LS

This is hands down the funniest thing I’ve read all day.

  • Phillip Gardner

The fella is a terrible actor, stick to funny films like Ted.

  • Devin Dowling

I honestly can see him as Tony Stark.

  • Marvelfan

If this miscast were to ever take place, i’d have to turn in my Avengers card.

  • GhandiGhandi

Dude he’s the same person in every. Movie: annoying know it all douche from Boston and I just want to punch his short little monkey face. Iron Man yeah right. Get a personality first midget.

  • Hatbox

    Marky Stark

  • Sentry616

    All of my nope.

  • Lilly

Really? I didn’t think Iron Man would appeal to Marky Mark, given the lack of an Asian Mandarin for him to blind and shout racial slurs at.

  • Convoy

Can I see Mark Wahlberg as Tony Stark? Yes. He does have the look. Can he pull of playing Tony Stark? I have to say no. I like him as an actor and I have enjoyed his movies, but he typically plays the same character. All of his roles have been tailor made for him. So I can’t see him pulling off playing a playboy genius. I can’t see him pulling off Tony Stark’s swagger.

  • Chris

noooooooononononononononononono- the sheer amount of rage from the fanbase would incinerate Wahlberg on sight

  • Black Cesar

F that! Bob Saget for Iron Man!

  • HeroineAddict

And Beyonce wants to be Wonder Woman. Keep dreamin’ Marky.

  • Jonathon Hero

Is there a street smart Boston tough guy, preferably in law enforcement, in the Marvel universe? I think anything else is out of his wheelhouse. Maybe – MAYBE – he could convince me he was from Philly. Maybe.

  • Choos

Maybe if it was a complete reboot otherwise Downey ONLY as Tony Stark.

  • Eric s

Hey thanos, say hello to your mother for me, ok?
