Has ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Paved the Way For a ‘Star Wars’ TV Series?

The impressive, high-rated premiere of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. isn’t just great news for Marvel fans, it’s potentially huge for the future of Star Wars as well.

Blue Sky Disney reports the successful launch of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has reignited talk of a Star Wars TV series on ABC. The exact content of such a show is unclear — “it might not be the dark brooding adventure” of Star Wars: Underworld, a project proposed some years ago that would have centered on the criminal underground of the Star Wars universe. The tone of a live-action, ABC-housed Star Wars series isn’t likely “to go beyond PG-13″ territory, the blog assets; that’s no surprise, given that it’s network television and a multibillion-dollar franchise. The timeline isn’t clear, either, as the series could take place between the prequels and the original trilogy, or closer to the sequel trilogy spearheaded by director J.J. Abrams. Indeed, even the report notes the show is only in the “batting ideas around” phase, and isn’t likely to solidify until 2014 at the earliest.

Still, news of ABC’s interest in Star Wars isn’t a surprise. In August, ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee admitted he had “an inkling in [his] mind” about a possible Star Wars series, but nothing was set in stone.

“We’d love to do something with Lucasfilm, we’re not sure what yet,” he said. “We haven’t even sat down with them. We’re going to look at [the live-action series], we’re going to look at all of them, and see what’s right. We weren’t able to discuss this with them until [Disney’s Lucasfilm acquisition] closed and it just closed. It’s definitely going to be part of the conversation.”

Considering episode 2 scored a 3.1 i highly doubt it’s paved the way for anything!

Agent of SHIELD’s premiere wasn’t “high-rated”. It was a flop, considering the huge marketing campaign.

It has since collapsed to 8 million viewers, which shows it is not going to gain viewership.

Please stop acting as an echo chamber for the PR hype and report the facts a little more accurately.

Demo numbers are meaningless except as PR spin for failed shows. The fact ABC used those in premiere week shows the show had done poorly (#3 in its time slot in spite of the hype).

Advertisers don’t buy 18-49 numbers, they, as a group, buy pairs of eyes.

Agents of SHIELD is lucky it only dropped 33% considering how dreadful the pilot was. Just shows how people will watch anything if it makes it an entire season.
