Mr. Peabody and Sherman are time traveling several decades in their leap from the small to the big screen, but they seem to be in good hands with director Rob Minkoff (Stuart Little, The Haunted Mansion). The 3D-animated feature from DreamWorks Animation rejuvenates the dynamic duo who first appeared on The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show in the ’50s and ’60s.

USA Today unveiled the first images from the updated Mr. Peabody & Sherman film, and also talked to Minkoff along with Ty Burrell, who will voice Mr. Peabody.

“These are timeless characters,” Minkoff said. “The nature of this relationship and Mr. Peabody’s classic character — that has never gone out of style.”

The new film will find the family dynamic between canine Mr. Peabody and his human son Sherman (Max Charles) shaken up after the latter becomes smitten with a girl he meets at school. In fact, Sherman and his new friend Penny (Ariel Winter) actually kick off the story when she refused to leave ancient Egypt during one temporal transference session.

“For years, they have been happy together, and everything is going great, and suddenly Sherman has to go to school, where girls are starting to influence him,” Minkoff said. “And it starts to change him.”

The voice cast also includes Stephen Colbert, Lake Bell, Stanley Tucci, Mel Brooks, Leslie Mann, Allison Janney and Patrick Warburton. Mr. Peabody & Sherman is set to debut on March 7, 2014.

Ug, I hate it when male families have to have a quota of female. It ruined Johnny Quest in the 80’s and will probably happen here too. Now don’t misunderstand, I’m not ragging on women or women in any form in families, I’m just saying it’s so rare to get to explore the dynamics of an all male family – which often do exist in the real world.
