‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ to Open Dec. 18, 2015

Despite a reported internal disagreement about a 2015 release, Disney announced this afternoon that Star Wars: Episode VII will arrive in theaters on Dec. 18, 2015.

“We’re very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture,” Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn said in a statement posted on

The film, which will kick off a new trilogy, will be directed by J.J. Abrams from a script by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi), who replaced original screenwriter Michael Arndt. John Williams will return to score the movie.

Shooting is scheduled to begin in the spring at England’s Pinewood Studios.

Moving out of summer 2015 so as to lower the competition — smart. No other studio has announced an X-Mas movie to compete (though there will certainly be one).

    Disney has:

    April 2014: Captain America 2
August 2014: Guardians of the Galaxy
    May 2015: Avengers 2
    July 2015: Ant-Man
    December 2015: Star Wars VII
Summer 2016: Pirates of the Caribbean 5
December 2016: Star Wars VIII (assumed)
December 2017: Star Wars IX (assumed)

We also need to splice in more super hero movies as well as Avengers 3, which will probably be released in 2018 (giving 3 years for lead in movies to be released).
