Report: Paul Rudd is ‘Ant-Man’ Frontrunner

The holidays are finally upon us, and yet we still haven’t received the greatest gift of them all: confirmation on who’s starring in director Edgar Wright’s upcoming Ant-Man.

Recent reports placed Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Paul Rudd as the frontrunners for the role of Henry Pym, the size-changing scientist at the heart of the Marvel film. Gordon-Levitt has been connected to a few Marvel projects, including Guardians of the Galaxy and the developing Doctor Strange adaptation. Business as usual there. Rudd, on the other hand, is a new name in the mix. He’s a popular actor on many levels, but hardly a traditional action star — in other words, the exact type of actor that Marvel likes to target.

Although there’s still no confirmation on the casting, it looks like Rudd is inching closer to the role. The Hollywood Reporter checks in on a slew of new projects looking to cast main characters, and in its rundown on Ant-Man, the outlet contends Rudd is the frontrunner.

“Now there is a push to find Pym’s 30ish girlfriend,” the website adds. Previous rumors have connected Rashida Jones to the part of Janet Van Dyne, Pym’s love interest and the eventual superhero Wasp. No further news on that end, but it’s exciting to hear that Rudd not only remains in the mix for Pym, but is apparently the top candidate.

Ant-Man hits theaters on July 31, 2015, nearly three months after the arrival of The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

So very ok with this, should be an awesome match.

  • AirDave

Yes! I’ll pay good money to see Paul Rudd as Hank Pym! Let’s just go ahead and drop the “domestic violence” part of things. Let’s make him wacky and eccentric and absent-minded. A loveable everyman. Who only beats up on bad guys.

im cool with this but has it been confirmed that its hank and not scott lang?

  • lewis4510

I figured that Rudd was the guy after JGL denied his involvement, and Rudd kept silent.

  • dekko

I like the idea! JGL bothers me – his voice seems put on, like Keanu Reeves. Too bad they’d never repair Rudd with Reece Witherspoon at this point – they were great together in “Overnight Delivery.”

AND How Do You Know, really good chemistry.

He and Rashida get along pretty well too, and she’d be a good match for Wanda I think. She’s kind of a real life Janet, sans superpowers, actually.

    Wanda? For WASP. (dumb fingers)

  • KofiSmiles

    Aye! Raise a glass!

This does seem to point to Hank Pym as the main protagonist if they’re casting him and Janet Van Dyne. However, it doesn’t rule out Scott Lang since Wright did say it was a “heist film”.

Personally, I like Rudd for the job as Pym. JG-L could still play Lang. ;)

So is this finally confirmation that it Hank Pym? Before people were saying the film might star Scott Lang.

Rudd is cool, though I always thought Alan Tudyk would have been perfect for the role. Come to think of it, I could see Jewel Staite as Wasp.

  • Alex W

Except that Wright confirmed ages ago that he was using Pym.

It’s hard to tell if you’re being sarcastic or not.

But, one of my favorite things is seeing a likeable actor go dark. Rudd has done likeable so many times, I’d really love to see what he did with a role that has more edge to it. I think he could do it if given the chance.

That’s not to say I want to see Rudd beating on his girlfriend, just that I think he’s capable of something darker than his usual roles.

If you knew anything about Hank Pym you’d know that the “domestic violence” tag defines about 0.0000000001% of Pym’s personality, and was one of the stupidest things they ever did to such a great character. Making Pym a wife beater (which he wasn’t in the slightest) made as much sense as making Hal Jordan a mass murderer.

Rudd is a seasoned actor who can play a myriad of roles, not just comedy. I suggest you seek out something other than Anchor Man to see what a great actor he truly is.

    Alison Brie for Wasp.

  • Brodieman

Zooey Deschanel or Elizabeth Banks for Wasp, they have great chemestry with Rudd

  • Yinta

…I guess it’s like many of people have said, good guy gone bad, and Rudd could deliver an extraordinary acting on Pym…

  • Tophman

Ah, must have missed that. Guess time will tell what direction (& creative license) Wright will be taking with the character. I just hope he doesn’t make it too serious… one of the hallmarks of success for Marvel films is the touch of humor they inject into their stories.

Personally, I always felt that Pym wasn’t a very interesting character since he is essentially Reed Richards (obsessed with his work) and Tony Stark (eccentric futurist). What most sets him apart imo is his unique wife-beater status & personality disorder, traits I’m not sure can make it into the hero’s first outing (since we have to like the character first). Guess time will tell.

Don’t worry, with Edgar Wright directing it’ll definitely have its fair share of comedy.

  • Alex W

I’ll just say Emily Mortimer for the sake of having everyone from “Our Idiot Brother” listed on the page.
