Disney Gains Rights to Future ‘Indiana Jones’ Movies

raiderswide

Walt Disney Studios and Paramount Pictures have reached an Indiana Jones agreement, Deadline reported Friday. Disney now has marketing distribution rights to future films in the famous (and lucrative) franchise, while Paramount will retain distribution for the first four movies.

That means Disney is now clear to make a new Indiana Jones movie, although no such announcement has been made — yet. Deadline calls such a thing “likely,” and title star Harrison Ford said in October on the UK’s The Graham Norton Show that he would do another Indiana Jones “in a New York minute.” “I don’t think there’s any barrier to Indiana Jones being an old fart,” the actor said. “It’s OK. We’ve seen him in all stages of his life.”

Disney’s October 2012 $4.05 billion purchase of Lucasfilm included Indiana Jones, but the franchise’s preexisting deal with Paramount made monetizing the property — including moving forward on a new production — tricky. Friday’s deal removes those obstacles, though Paramount is set to receive financial rewards on any potential future Indy films. The Disney/Indiana Jones relationship stretches back to at least 1989, when the Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular! opened at Walt Disney World.

I think it’s time to recast Indy. Nathan Fillion would be perfect.

It’s more than likely that they’ll recast Indy, no way they would have an Indy movie with Indy that is “old fart” as Ford puts it. They’ll go for a younger one so that they can turn Indiana Jones into a new film franchise like Pirates of the Caribbean.

I’m thinking do a prequel with Old Indy scenes bookending flashbacks to a young indy.

sort of a Young Indiana Jones Chronicles?

With Disney now involved, no doubt they’ll shoehorn a young girl in as sidekick.

They haven’t shoehorned stuff in with the Marvel movies.

    Reboot!

Ford gets to play Indy’s dad!

Too old at this point. He’s already 42 by the time they get to the third film he wouldn’t look right any more. I would kill to see vintage Fillion as IJ though.

I have to echo most people’s comments. Of course I loved Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones . . . when he was in his prime. But that ship has sailed. It’s time to pass on the whip and fedora to a younger, more fit guy who can do the job. It’s as if we were to still have Sean Connery as James Bond or the surviving Star Trek cast still zipping around space fighting space baddies. It’s just not feasible or exciting.

I’m excited to see some of the original cast members of Star Wars in the next film, but I would hope their roles would take a back seat to newer, younger prodigies. But let’s hope they can act and pull it off!

Let’s not forget that the film franchise is now called “Indiana Jones and . . . ” so it would either have to be a completely new actor inheriting the role or the “son” taking on the moniker.
