Josh Gad to Star in ‘Gilligan’s Island’ Movie

Josh Gad, who’s been praised for his performances in Disney’s Frozen and the Broadway musical The Book of Mormon, will star in Gilligan’s Island, the Warner Bros. adaptation of the 1960s sitcom.

Deadline reports he’ll write the script with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, who worked on the canceled NBC comedy 1600 Penn, which Gad co-created. There’s no indication yet which character the actor will play, but the website suggests both Gilligan and the Skipper are possibilities.

Created by Sherwood Schwartz, Gilligan’s Island originally aired on CBS for just three seasons, from 1964 to 1967, but the castaways of the S.S. Minnow lived on in syndication, and in three made-for-TV movies as well as two animated series (a remake and a sci-fi version, in which the cast escapes the island by rocket, only to become stranded on a distant planet).

    When will it end?

Josh Gad as Gilligan, really? He’ll have to get on the P90x diet or some other extreme workout regime to look the part. Gilligan was a really skinny dude but he was also pretty funny.

I’m a fan of Gilligan’s Island; I grew up hooked on the reruns. Gad could pull of Gilligan. It depends on the story they tell. I’m really tired of my childhood being destroyed by idiots. Gilligan’s Island worked because the actors already were the characters they played.

John Goodman should play the Skipper. That’s the only way I’d see this.

Well, the good thing is that your childhood is NOT being destroyed. These movies may be all kinds of awful, but they actually do nothing to ruin the memories of what you grew up enjoying. You can just ignore them and relish the childhood memories as you always have.

No, the actors were actors. Jim Backus wasn’t at all like Thurston Howell; Bob Denver wasn’t at all Gilligan; and so on.

Josh as Gilligan? Why not? Let’s sign Melissa McCarthy as Ginger.

The only reason anyone’s ‘childhood is ruined’ by any remake is because they are attention seeking over the top drama queens.
