Ed Brubaker: ‘Captain America’ Sequel is ‘Best Movie That Marvel Has Ever Made’

April sees the arrival of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the continuation of Steve Rogers’ exploration of the modern world. The sequel takes its title and several story cues from writer Ed Brubaker’s acclaimed run on Marvel’s Captain America comic, which reintroduced the long-deceased Bucky Barnes as a brainwashed Soviet spy known as the Winter Soldier.

Given his connection with the source material, Brubaker enjoyed some hands-on experience with the film, hanging out on set and witnessing production firsthand. Based on what he saw, the writer is happy to make a bold claim.

“It’s the best movie that Marvel has ever made,” he told IGN. “The stuff I’ve seen from it, it also has two of the best fight scenes that I’ve ever seen on film.”

“It’s going to be amazing,” he continued. “It’s gonna make a billion dollars. I got to go and be on set for a while and watch them film and stuff. It was just amazing. I couldn’t be happier with how it came out.”

Directed by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, Captain America: The Winter Soldier stars Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Haley Atwell, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp, Max Hernandez,  Georges St-Pierre and Robert Redford. It opens April 4

Has he been hanging out with Donald Trump lately? Looking forward to it, actually. Marvel keeps getting some damn fine actors for their movies.

  • kbyrd3

That’s all I need to hear. I’m going!

While I have high hopes for this movie, I think that maybe Ed Brubaker is a little bit biased! (In other news, Ed Brubaker bought his dad a coffee mug pronouncing him the World’s Greatest Dad!)

  • Scratch89

I think that it would be mindblowing to see your own comic translated to screen, to be there on set and witness it right before your eyes. That must have been a highlight in an already stellar career.

  • George Mitchell

Glad he didn’t go full Alan Moore. You should never go full Alan Moore.

  • Angrier Geek

I like Brubaker and I’m really looking forward to this, but Chris Claremont liked The Wolverine so that says it all about the intoxicating effect of seeing your work onscreen.

  • George Mitchell

    Mandelbaum! Mandelbaum! Mandelbaum!

Are we referring to X-Men Origins: Wolverine or The Wolverine? Because a number of people, including myself, liked The Wolverine. I personally found it the best X-Men film after First Class.

  • Teri

Ed Brubaker ate a “Captain America: Winter Soldier” cake that I made. I still feel pretty cool about that. :)

  • JokersNuts

I am so excited for this movie!

  • Lulu Grandiron

DC fan here but I enjoyed the first Cap movie more than any of Marvel’s other offerings…

  • LightningBug

The Wolverine is pretty well liked, except for the last 30 minutes. Chris Claremont is in pretty good company as far as his opinion of that movie is concerned.

  • DRAKE_WANG

Sadly, witnessing production and watching a post-edits film are two vastly different experiences. We’ll see how it goes after editors and executives have a hand.

  • NateGrey

I am sure this has nothing to do with getting financially compensated for his work if the movie does well.

  • John Everyman

Can I go a little Alan Moore?

  • John Everyman

Hey, if nothing else, it sounds like it takes a lot from the source material, which is a great thing.

  • George Mitchell

A little Alan Moore can be cathartic.

  • Thedude3445

It doesn’t. He doesn’t get paid unless he gets story credit (which I doubt he will).

  • Jimmy Russell

I know he has to be white (for now) but do they have to make him THAT white?

  • NateGrey

He has already stated he wont get money from the movie directly but from the paperback sales. He is trying to increase interest.

  • Felwithe

Yeah. I get the idea he’s very excited, but doesn’t have a lot of film experience. I take it with the same grain of salt I do Stan Lee’s musings: he clearly loves the comics and the movies, and I’m glad for his enthusiasm.

BREAKING: MARK MILLAR KILLS ED BRUBAKER, WEARS BRUBAKER’S SKIN FOR INTERVIEWS

  • JusticeBringer

    So did I.

  • https://twitter.com/dnwilliams dnwilliams

OMG Jimmy, you can’t just ask people why they’re white.

  • JusticeBringer

I don’t blame him. Upgraded WWII Cap Suit + Super Soldier Suit > Blueberry Condom Cap Suit

  • Thedude3445

Ah good point. Though I don’t think saying this movie is going to be great will generate any extra interest in the trade paperbacks, just the movie itself. Though that does remind me I should buy Winter Soldier before prices inevitably shoot up (too late they already have)

  • Sean Stoltey

Not only is he currently working in Hollywood as a screenwriter, he’s a legacy. His grandfather was a big screenwriter back in the 30′s or 40′s (or both, not sure). So he grew up around the biz and is currently hip deep in it. So not a huge amount of film experience, but enough to figure it out.

  • Felwithe

Well, then that’s pretty naive of him to say that based on some test footage and being on set.

  • Tomax

I couldn’t imagine anyone from Marvel saying anything different about Cap2. Judging from what i’ve seen with my own 2 eyes from the trailer, the scale looks massive and looks to be up there with the Avengers.

  • Brak Dayton

    Me too!

  • Niko Tiapula

The fuck kind of question is that?

  • Geyser

He’s gonna job Crossbones like he did in the Comics :/

  • twincast

Well, from the beginning it’s been the Marvel Studios film I’ve been the most excited about since/other than Iron Man and The Avengers (and by now Age of Ultron, although The Winter Soldier does still top that one for me), so it better be right up there in terms of quality with those two films or I’ll be a sad little panda.

  • Neil McNab

Saw it yesterday and it ain’t so good.

  • Zeraphim24

    I’m totally watching this!!

  • Zeraphim24

    Lmao

I saw it this past weekend and Brubaker was right. It is the best movie Marvel has ever made.

  • TimNATL

I’ve seen it twice and it is an incredible movie!!
