Cut From ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2,’ Woodley May Be Too Busy For Sequel

shailene woodleyWhen Shailene Woodley’s scenes as Mary Jane Watson were unceremoniously cut from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 last summer, to “streamline the story,” there seemed to be a chance the actress could return for the third installment of the Sony franchise.

But now that Woodley is a rising star in her own right, headlining Summit Entertainment’s upcoming sci-fi adventure Divergent and its sequels, it looks like director Marc Webb will be searching for another actress to play MJ.

“I don’t know anything, but seeing as how they picked up the next two Divergent films, I don’t know how I would keep my sanity with two big action films in one year,” Woodley told MTV News at the Sundance Film Festival. “But anything can happen, so …”

At the time her four scenes were chopped from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the scuttlebutt was that her role would be recast. However, Webb appeared to leave the door open to Woodley’s return when he explained, “I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship. Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her.”

Opening May 4, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, Paul Giamatti and Sally Field. Divergent opens March 21.

I saw a really disgusting side of the usually pretty cool Internet Nerd Community when so many people were saying that she “wasn’t attractive” enough to play Mary Jane. The fact that these anonymous posters are probably rather homely gentlemen themselves only adds irony to the disgusting misogyny.

  • Jon Stenning

Once Gwen dies, just dye Emma Stone’s hair back to red and have her play Mary Jane. Problem solved!

  • Eric Curto

Knowing these scenes were filmed I hope Sony has the good sense to include them on the DVD or/and Blu-Ray release

  • kidburman

She wasn’t right for the role visually, lets move on

  • zombietag

i know theres been some complaints about beauty and stuff, and honestly im not someone who cares if theres a “hot girl” in the film im watching, but mary jane IS supposed to be a SUPER model. like knock out gorgeous, sooo… im not so upset theyll probably recast her haha

  • Guest

No one can really judge how she would have looked in the role, because no one has seen what she shot, movie magic and all…

  • jason glidden

I don’t understand the hate. But I will say , I didn’t buy Peter would be able to real in a supermodel and a certainly wwouldn’t buy it in the movies

  • Cat DeSantis Nesbitt

    Bye bye Miss Boringface

  • Walter Crockerham

its not what you by its whats based on the comics. and in the comics mj was a super model. Making an argument based on realism when we are talking about a iconic comic book hero that never ages and sticks to walls and has magic webbing coming from his hands that can hold up cars and can lift trucks seems kinda moronic.

  • Chuck777

Sony, hire this man. He will change the industry!

  • Chuck777

You wouldn’t want Danny Devito or present-day Mickey Rourke to play Batman, would you? Commenting on the fact that an actor does not have the appearance one associates with the character is not misogyny in and of itself. Obviously some can take it too far but the merely saying Shailene Woodley is not attractive enough to play a gorgeous super model is not callous of rude. She would be better served by playing a different character. No shame or malice intended.

  • Chuck777

Why? He’s an intelligent man who has a lot of compassion and who loves Marry Jane with his whole heart. That’s way more than the stereotypical producer or model comes with.

  • Chuck777

We’ve seen pictures of her on set.

  • Scratch89

You’re saying that she’s the female equivalent of Danny Devito?

    No, there’s no switched-gender equivalence. You’re just a dirtbag.

  • rob-bob

And she went on to play Hazel in The Fault in our Stars, that I feel is going to be her breakout role, after that Hollywood is going to really sit up and take notice.

  • CJArndt

This is such a great idea I cant get over it especially how in the 60s some would comment on Romita Sr drawing Gwen and MJ in a betty and veronica style that only the hair color was the reason you could tell them apart.

  • Statham

Which doesn’t mean we can judge what he performance was like. On-set photos meant shit.

  • Mike McTighe

Speaking personally, I think they are crazy. I try to remind myself of her age when I look at her photos, but damn.

  • Mike McTighe

It does seem like they keep using the same, awful photo of her. There’s plenty of magazine, red carpet and movie stills of her that show off how attractive she is. They keep going back to the “no make up at probably 5am” picture.

  • Aspiring Coonling

she’s naturally beautiful I don’t think she needs a picture of her wearing a pound of makeup to show how attractive she is.
