Vaughan & Chiang's "Paper Girls" Builds a Familiar Yet Disconcerting World
The Star Wars Rebels crew wants to introduce you to a brash, no-nonsense character who might be something of a rogue. No, they’re not teasing an appearance by Han Solo in the upcoming animated series, set between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Instead, it’s a droid.
Based on the designs of original Star Wars concept artist Ralph McQuarrie, Chopper — technically an astromech droid also known as C1-10P — is described as goodhearted, but also lazy and cranky. He’s “an essential crew member of the Ghost, tasked with keeping the starship running and operable for its band of heroes. In reality, thanks to his many ‘unique’ upgrades and customizations, no other alien, human, or droid could handle the job.”
“He likes to do things the way that he wants, not necessarily the way the crew wants, or as fast as the crew would like, but he gets the job done,” executive producer Dave Filoni said. “If Artoo’s your favorite dog, Chopper’s the cat.”
Star Wars Rebels will debut in the fall in an hour-long special on Disney before moving over to Disney XD not long after.
