‘Girls’ Actor Adam Driver in Talks For ‘Star Wars’ Villain Role

"Inside Llewyn Davis" Premiere - Arrivals - The 51st New York Film Festival

Star Wars: Episode VII looks to be nearing its first casting announcement: As first reported by Variety, Girls actor Adam Driver is said in talks to sign on as “the” villain in the upcoming J.J. Abrams-directed film, and though the deal isn’t done, it’s said to be close. No firm details of the role are publicly known, but the character is reportedly “in the vein of” the most famous Star Wars villain of all, Darth Vader.

Driver previously had been rumored for a role in the film, and The Hollywood Reporter states his part may be the same one that Michael Fassbender and Joel Kinnaman were considered for.

Driver, 30, has played Adam Sackler on all three seasons of HBO’s Girls, and has appeared on film in both J. Edgar and Inside Llewyn Davis. Last fall, he was rumored to be in contention for the role of Nightwing in the Man of Steel sequel, which he soon denied.

Star Wars: Episode VII opens Dec. 15, 2015.

UPDATE: Girls creator and star Lena Dunham has commented on the Driver news via Twitter, expressing enthusiasm while making it clear she’s not able to confirm any reports:

Ugh, no. Does he really have the caliber or persona to pull off an iconic villain? Doesn’t seem like it.

  • Mitch Cumstein

Awesome…I wish every movie had Michael B Jordan, Adam Driver and Benedict Cumberbatch attached to it….oh wait according to CBR they are! Whew! That was a relief.

  • Godlike13

Well he does already kind of look like Jar Jar Binks…

I love the trail of super classy comments this guy gets in every article. Seriously, keep your rude, gay opinions to yourself.

  • MCharacter

You have no idea what the role is or if he is even going to get it. Fucking relax. The new trilogy is going to have like 20 villains.

  • Tom

According to whom? The one character who was arguably the crux of the entire six films is [spoilers] dead. Do you honestly think they’re gonna start throwing in villains like its nothing? Or that they’re going to try and establish ONE main villain with staying power to last (at least) three films? I don’t have to know what the specific role is. I just don’t believe he fits the bill for any Star Wars villain.

  • MCharacter

You took my 20 number literally? You don’t know anything about this movie and you’re freaking out over a rumor of him just being considered for a role. It might not even be a villain. How many villains and heroes did Lord of the Rings have or the original trilogy? I hope he gets a part now just so you can shit yourself in the theatre.

  • MCharacter

You took my 20 number literally? You don’t know anything about this movie, but anyone can look at a these movies, the Lord of the Rings, The Matrix trilogy, the original Star Wars Trilogy and see how many heroes and villains these movies have. You don’t even know if the role is for a villain. Just him being rumored for a part is enough for you to react. I hope he gets the part just so you shit yourself in the theatre.

  • Tom

…cute. I do find questionable your criteria for “freaking out” however, a phrase which seems increasingly more applicable to you with each response you post. And yes, him being rumored for a part IS enough for me and/or any other Star Wars fan to react in any capacity if we so choose, just as we would for any actor, positively or negatively. Somethin’ about free speech or or whatever, I don’t know. ;)

Oh but feel free to continue to post each response twice, your meltdowns would otherwise be utterly disregarded. XD

  • MCharacter

Free speech. You’re retarded. You have no idea what the story is going to be about and you’re going to bitch about a rumor you don’t know anything about. Of course you’ll look like spas when you react like that.

  • n3wtrin0

He could be a Tarkin style villain

  • Tom

Yeah, free speech. That’s it. Say it slowly if you need to, but remember to pause and breathe in between. ;) Look kid, since distorting events is clearly your gift over intellectual prowess, I think the rest of us will safely leave you to your singularly warped perceptions.

You’ve really got quite the hard-on for this guy though, I must say. ;p

  • MCharacter

You brought free speech in. Which is stupid. Oh and Adam Driver. According to Variety, a reputable source, the role his sexy ass is rumored to be cast as is a character “…said to be in the vein of iconic “Star Wars” villain Darth Vader” I don’t even care. I just found your earlier reaction ridiculous. I hope this goes through now.

  • Tom

Oh, you suddenly don’t care? You sure? You seemed real eager for me to “shit myself in the theatre,” while your best “defense” was that I “have no idea what the story [or rumor] was about.” And here you acknowledge a somewhat disturbing sexual attraction of some sort. I mean, to each his own but…

Oh, and “I hope this goes through now.” You didn’t exactly send a telegram…it went through. Loud and clear. ;)

  • MCharacter

What’s so disturbing? I don’t understand what’s wrong? I mean I don’t care if he gets the part because it’s not like I really want to see him in the movie. What I mean by “go through” is that I hope the casting happens now because of the way you’ve been reacting.

  • Tom

O-Oh, yes, yes, sure, fine, of course. Now I understand. As you were, then.

  • Melwing

^ These two are the same guy.
