The CW’s ‘iZombie’ ‘Not Sticking That Close to the Comic,’ Rob Thomas Says

izombie promoExecutive producer Rob Thomas has confirmed what fans of the Vertigo series probably have already deduced from the flurry of casting announcements: The CW’s iZombie pilot will deviate significantly from the source material by Chris Roberson and Mike Allred.

“We’re not sticking that close to the comic,” the creator of Veronica Mars tells IGN. “The thing that we’re taking from the comic is this mid-20s female zombie who eats brains and gets the memories of the dead, but we put her in a coroner’s office, so there is sort of a ‘case of the week’ each week where she gets snippets of memories of the deceased and tries to solve the crime.”

As Thomas’ comments underscore, the CW project is being billed as a supernatural police procedural, with Rose McIver (Once Upon a Time, Power Rangers R.P.M.) starring as Olivia “Liv” Moore, a med student-turned-zombie who teams with the medical examiner and a police detective to solve murder cases to silence the voices in her head.

“What the studio and network asked for, they want a new sort of ‘cool’ female lead on The CW,” Thomas explains to the website, “they want something in the vein of Buffy or Veronica Mars, so they asked me to write in the tone that I normally write in. It will not be Zombie Apocalypse Show, it will be sort of fun, cool, smart, funny — a single-female lead who happens to be a zombie.”

TheWrap reports the project has filled out its regular cast with the addition of relative newcomer Rahul Kohli as Dr. Ravi Chakrabarti, an enthusiastic nerd with a brilliant mind who becomes Liv’s friend, partner and confidant. He joins McIver, Nora Dunn, Malcolm Goodwin, Rahul Kohli, Robert Buckley, Alexandra Krosney and David Anders

If Rob Thomas writes iZombie anything like Veronica Mars i really don’t care. That show was great!

  • alistaircrane

I love Veronica Mars but I am not a fan of this concept. I hate police procedurals, and a supernatural twist isn’t going to change that. Plus, I hate that they’ve deviated so far from the source material.

  • Michael M. Jones

They’d have been better off picking up the rights to Diana Rowland’s White Trash Zombie series, which is a lot closer to their stated concept.

Why buy something and adapt it when it’s concept in name only?

  • Evan Meadow

If we wanted Tru Calling back it would have stayed on the air previously.

  • CudaBiro

So really they just wanted the name and faintest hint of a concept.

  • CeeeCeeeCeee

Name recognition and a built in fandom.

  • legionquest

What’s the point then? Write your own show and don’t co-opt a ‘franchise’ and then write your own show anyway!

  • legionquest

But that fandom will turn on you and then trash the show if they dont get what they want – it’s an own goal

  • John DeSpirito

Thats a shame, I would have watched a faithful adaption from start to finish. Even a half faithful adaption. Now you get nothing from me, WB. I imagine a million tween-aged kids will watch it though.

  • Kryptaku

I don’t understand the point of saying “Let’s adapt iZombie into a tv show!” and then change every single detail, including creating a brand new lead character. They couldn’t even be bothered to call her Gwen? Jesus … wtf? I don’t want to come off like an angry nerd or anything, but this doesn’t make any sense to me.

  • CJB

Plus, it’s not exactly like iZombie, of which I own every issue, was a hugely known property that was blowing the doors off the sales charts, so the built in fandom is minute comparatively.

  • I don’t understand

The thing i don’t understand with comic adaptations is I know you adapt one thing to another or adapt something from one format to another, things have to change to fit or make work on the format you are putting it in. But when you deviate so much from the source material where what you’re taking inspiration from is barely recognizable, what is the fucking point? Why not just make up your own thing and call it something else? What’s the point of “adapting” iZombie if the only thing you are taking from the book is “girl eats brains to see events”?

  • Orphan

This whole spin is revenge on Chris Roberson for standing up for creator rights and nothing less. Tie the property up and then trash it. Thomas is a jerk for even involving himself with this. How would he feel if it was Veronica taken out of his hands and rewritten in this manner?

  • BeastieRunner

Well that is both expected and disappointing.

  • Jonny_anonymous

You mean tries to bank cash off the name

  • Pol Rua

Oh look, someone comes up with a great idea that’s full of great, fun, weird, nifty ideas.
Some TV exec grabs the idea and jettisons everything that isn’t a clone of Tru Calling/Medium. Colour me shocked and horrified.

  • CeeeCeeeCeee

“New Show based on cult graphic novel” pricks a lot of ears up, whether the fanbase is huge or not.

  • wtf

That would be normal. Instead they seem to have taken the ideas from another book series, I can’t imagine money won’t be paid out.
