Hugh Jackman Suggests Channing Tatum Might Make a Good Wolverine

When Hugh Jackman, who’s played Wolverine in seven films, acknowledged last month that a recasting of the character is “inevitable,” it ignited another round of speculation as to who might succeed him in such an iconic role. And now even Jackman is getting in on the act.

“I don’t know who could play him,” he told Yahoo! Movies UK & Ireland, before adding, “Channing Tatum could probably play him.”

However, Jackman’s X-Men: Days of Future Past co-star James McAvoy finds the actor irreplaceable. “Nobody could step into your shoes,” he said. “They’ve got to retire the character when you finish. When you’re done with it, they retire the character.”

Saying there’s no way Fox will retire Wolverine, Jackman jokingly warned McAvoy, “You will get the offer in about five years time and you’ll go, ‘My God, he was right.’ But when you get offered it, don’t do it. For our friendship, don’t do it.”

Tatum, who will next be seen in 22 Jump Street and Jupiter Ascending, is apparently a popular choice for the X-Men franchise: After the actor expressed his interest in playing Gambit, X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner revealed, “I’m dying to do a Gambit movie with Channing Tatum.”

Good Lord, no. Jon Bernthal or Joe Manganiello, maybe. Never Channing Tatum. I’m thinking he may be able to pull off Gambit like he wants, though.

  • LoserNemesis

STAHP making Wolverine “handsome”. He’s not supposed to be handsome.

  • LoserNemesis

He’s supposed to be short and to have beast-like face.

  • Vizator

That’s one of the most asinine things I’ve ever heard. That piece of trash couldn’t act his way out of a wet paper bag.

  • William_Spike

As soon as they recast Jackman I´m out. I wont watch any films with Wolverine if Jackman doesnt play him. Same with Downey Jr. as Iron Man. They are these characters to me as much as Stallone is Rambo or Willis is MCClane. No substitutes allowed.

There’s a comic called old man Logan. It’s wolverine when he looks about 50-60 years old. They can’t get rid of Jackman just yet!

  • SpideyLex

I love Jackman as Wolverine. Just like I love RDJ as Stark. For the longest time I couldn’t / didn’t see anyone else playing Wolverine. Except for one dude: Tyler Hoechlin. I think he could play wolverine really well.

It’s inevitable that Jackman will exit from playing Wolverine. He has admitted it. However, Tatum would be the wrong choice. I don’t doubt what he can do, yet not as Wolverine. He doesn’t have what it takes to portray Wolverine, not the right look nor the right amount of “intensity”. I’m sure his fans would be “oozing” at the sight of it, however the choice should be what’s best for the franchise. The actor chosen needs to fit the role.

Gambit…He meant Gambit, right? Somebody tell me he meant Gambit and not Wolverine…

  • Piotr

Tatum is too pretty. Jackman at least has a gritty look to him. Kind of like a young Clint Eastwood, which is what Wolverine needs to work. I see Tatum threatening someone, popping out the claws and then the person laughing at him because i would be so unbelievable.

  • Paul Davidson

    I agree!

  • Paul Davidson

I have a sister who is a hardcore gambit fan, & she hated that idea. She couldn’t even stand the first actor to portray him. Again nothing against Tatum but just doesn’t fit…neither of them.

  • Piotr

Haha, yeah, I don’t really like him as Gambit either. But that was the rumor going around before this one, and at least that is a little bit better of a fit character-wise.

  • Scooby

Am I the only one who thinks Tatum kind of looks like he has Downs Syndrome? I’m not being nasty, but his face has the characteristics.

  • John

This will get killed, but I could see Levitt pulling it off. To me the character was always older more weathered making other xmen seem much younger.

  • Mz. Hyde

Nahh, he can be Gambit :)

  • William_Spike

you really have a problem with respecting peoples opinions do you? I dont mind some characters being recast. Recasting Spider-Man, Batman and Superman worked all fine for me because it was another universe. But I dont want to see another Tony Stark in the MCU and another Wolverine in the Fox X-verse. Period. Deal with it and stop being so fucking judgmental.

People like you are the reason why nothing in Hollywood is sacred anymore and they keep remaking every damn great classic. It has nothing to do with not moving forward but some characters should NEVER be recast. Such as McClane, Rambo, the Terminator, Riggs and Murtaugh, Selene, Freddy Krueger, Pinhead, Wolverine, Cap or Iron Man. Some things need to be sacred. But because of ppl like you they arent.

  • Tom Rampone

Jon Bernthal as Gambit is the greatest idea I’ve ever heard. He has a great faux southern accent, as he demonstrated in the first two seasons of The Walking Dead. If he could tweak that accent to be more of a Louisianan accent, it would be perfect. Couple his voice with his superb acting skills, and we have a perfect Gambit. Case Closed.

But doing that would be hard for Fox without the use of any other character beside Wolverine
