Channing Tatum Has Met With X-Men Franchise Producer About Playing Gambit

gambit

White House Down star Channing Tatum revealed last fall that he would love to play Gambit, scoring an enthusiastic endorsement from not only X-Men franchise producer Lauren Shuler Donner — “I’m dying to do a Gambit movie with Channing Tatum” — but also the blessing of Taylor Kitsch, who portrayed the character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

But what are the odds we could actually see Tatum as smooth-talking New Orleans mutant Remy LeBeau? Pretty decent, it seems.

“I met with Lauren Shuler Donner, and I would love it,” he told MTV backstage at the MTV Movie Awards. “Gambit is really the only X-Man I’ve ever loved. I mean, I’ve loved them all, they’re all great, but I guess just being from being down South – my dad’s from Louisiana, I’m from Mississippi, Alabama, Florida – I don’t know, I just related to him. He’s just kind of suave … He’s the most un-X-Men X-Man that’s ever been in X-Men, other than maybe Wolverine, who’s like the anti-hero. He’s a thief. He’s not even, like, a hero. He’s kind of walking the line of gray. … He loves women and drinking and smoking and stuff, so he’s just a cool guy who happens to have a good moral center …

I hope it [comes together],” Tatum continued. “You never know, it’s a weird industry. If the stars align, I would die to play it. I’m already working on the accent. It’s crappy at the moment.”

The character, who was introduced nearly 24 years ago, appears to be on the minds of a lot of people lately: X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer revealed just last month that he’s considering bringing Gambit and a young Nightcrawler into the follow-up X-Men: Apocalypse.

    Nooooooooooooo!!!!

  • demoncat_4

no for the last thing tatum needs to be part of is the x-men franchise when they already had a cool looking gambit by the actor who played him in the first wolverine film

  • Kabuce

They need to stay with Taylor Kitsch on this. If they didn’t recast Wolverine after the Origins movie, they shouldn’t recast Kitch. At least he has the look.

  • kalorama

Not really seeing it. Channing Tatum exudes very little charm or screen presence to me.

  • LightningBug

While I’m not sure I see it, I think that these characters deserve actors with the kind of enthusiasm that Tatum clearly shows for Gambit. He obviously knows a thing or two about him, and that’s a great start. I’d rather have an actor with passion for the role than one who meets my mental image of a character.

    no thank you

    NOOOO!!! NO GOD NO!!!

  • Michael Salt Thompkins

They’ll cast him and all of the movies going forward will revolve around him. Gambit and the X-men…..watch for it

  • demoncat_4

so much for fox showing they finaly care about the x-men as a franchise. if they cast him. for he will make gambit like his other words more a pretty boy surfer air head type.

  • quickdrawmcgraw

it doesnt matter who they cast thier just gonna mess it up anyway like they did with rogue and i think the gambit in the wolverine origins sucked

  • XSpectreGreyX

    *Clears throat* NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  • guest

i think anything would be better than Kitsch. No red eyes, No cajun accent, his staff was more of a giant scepter, couldnt even do any card flourishes.. didnt give a gambit vibe at all. At least Tatum knows the character and is willing to give it a good go.

  • Chuck777

I do not like the idea of Channing Gambit but… That is not a bad argument in favor of him.

  • Chuck777

He couldn’t hold the Cajun accent for more than two lines at a time!

  • Tommy Rankin

Fox truly caring bout the X-Men?! Hah, that’ll be the day! All they care about is using the names of big franchises like FF and X-Men to sell their otherwise sub-par (at best) or shitty (at worst) movies.

  • Tommy Rankin

Well at least he seem to have a lot of enthusiasm for the role. That’s an okay start and a lot better than them casting someone who doesn’t care about the character or isn’t at all familiar with them. Let’s just hope that he gets the character right and has a great script to work off of. (Yes I know it’s a Fox movie so it’s not gonna happen but I can always wish)

  • Kabuce

Tatum is no better at holding an accent. I sat through “the Eagle” and experienced that. This is a case of FOX wanting to hitch a ride on the fame of an actor rather than building up the existing image of Gambit.

  • Jasper

I wonder if he’s been working on his French accent for this role.

  • runner_j

    Ugh.

  • demoncat_4

and to keep the rights and money from the franchises from going back to dismarvel . so marvel films can finaly do a fantastic four and x-men film right. like a fantastic four film where Galactus is not a cloud and a not so heavy on wolverine film.

    Gah… Mercy…

    Dear Fox,

Gambit is easily my favorite X-Man. Even moreso than Mr. There Can’t Be An X-Flick Without Me Wolverine. Please, please, PLEASE don’t do this.
