‘Venom’ Producers Tease Carnage Face-Off

If the promise of two more Amazing Spider-Man movies following May’s sequel wasn’t enough for you, then two villain-centered spinoffs — Sinister Six and Venom — just might.

Announced in December, the planned Sony franchise expansion has Drew Goddard writing and directing the former, with Alex Kurtzman attached to helm the latter. But what will these movies be about? If Spider-Man isn’t involved, who will these notorious rogues go up against?

It would appear we have an answer, at least as far as Venom is concerned. Speaking with IGN, producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach made it clear they think including Carnage in the Venom film is “a great idea.”

“The idea of Venom and Carnage … [we’re] taking it into consideration,” Tolmach said. “Watch out for this Venom movie. We’re crazy excited.”

That sounds like confirmation to us, but we’ll wait for further announcements before officially earmarking Cletus Kasady for his big-screen debut.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 swings into theaters on May 2, with The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and 4 set to arrive in 2016 and 2018.

That sounds boring. I’m not sure of the appeal of these movies without Spider-Man…

I’m not sure of the appeal of the Spider-Man movies that actually have Spider-Man in them at this point…

so lets cast our minds back to just before spiderman 3, at the time, Sony were committed to doing spin-offs venom. Contracts were signed, Topher grace was talking about it, carnage was rumoured to be the villain, script writers were supposed busy at work.

of course it never happened, not because spiderman 3 was unpopular (box office returns suggest the opposite) but because it was never gonna happen. Its just marketing hype, using the great rumour mill that is the internet to build publicity about the film that in the cinema.

Oh and this has happen multiple times – See Fox with Silver Surfer Film rumours just before FF4 Rise of Silver Surfer, or Magneto spin of telling his tale in the camps and his escape to freedom just before X-Men 3 came out (I’ll concede some of that idea did happen in First Class)

I bet Gwen dies in AS2 and comes back as Carnage. Cletus Kasady therefor can be cut out of the equation and they won’t have to introduce a serial killer into a PG-13 movie.

Sounds good but better left for the sequel. Why introduce the knock-off in the same beat?

  • nerdbasher

They seem so desperate to spin off movies.

  • Saint_Jimmy

If the pull that Ultimate crap, count me out of watching this movie. It needs to be classic Venom (Eddie Brock) and Carnage (Cletus Kasady)

can’t think of his name but cast the guy that played Rorschach to play Carnage

I kind of thought they just spun first class out of the Magneto origin film idea at least that’s how it seemed he was clearly the main star of the movie and all the things you mentioned about him were covered in the plot so to do a solo origin movie now would be pointless its been done

  • Doug Sullivan

not desperate to spinoff movies just desperate to make money anyway they can without thinking of new ideas and actually being the creative people they claim to be

  • nerdbasher

    That too.

If they don’t take the time to first setup Venom in the antihero role in his own movie without Carnage then the film will come off rushed and contrived just like Raimi’s Spiderman 3. I love the thought of setting a Venom vs Carnage showdown on the big screen but that should be Venom 2 at the earliest.

His name is Jackie Earl Hayley. And ya know….I can see that. That’s be a really good casting choice. I’m sure there are better people out there but, off the top of my head I can’t think of any. Excellent choice, sir.
