Will J. Jonah Jameson Appear in ‘Amazing Spider-Man 3?’

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will feature a large cast of characters including obvious must-haves like Peter Parker, Aunt May and Gwen Stacy along with lesser-known ones like Alistair Smythe. One name has been noticeably absent from Sony’s franchise reboot, however: J. Jonah Jameson.

“I like the idea very much of him coming up in the next film,” director Marc Webb said in a recent Google+ Hangout with fans. “It was more easy to accept a new Spider-Man than someone who could outdo J.K. Simmons in that role. He is so iconic. That’s something we’ve really talked about. Obviously I love that character because he poses such an interesting dilemma for Spider-Man. The answer is … I don’t know, but I think you can expect to see him in the future.”

Simmons’ portrayal of J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s three Spider-Man films might be one of the most spot-on comic book casting decisions of all time. So the question at this point is whether the studio will find another actor or lure back Simmons, who also voiced the character for the animated Ultimate Spider-Man and Marvel’s Avengers Assemble.

Before anyone can hop into the role of Jameson, though, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will arrive in theaters on May 2.

too bad his place in the movie is practically meaningless since Sony is obsessed with everyone loving spider-man

Bring back JK Simmons, like “M” in the Bond franchise. No one will care.

  • Sylv Taylor

Bring back Simmons, if he’ll do the movies. No reason to replace someone that good with someone else, even if it is a reboot: as has been said, the Bond movies did that.

  • Tyenkrovy

Can’t be outdone. Just bring in J.K. Simmons again. Any attempt to do “better” than Simmons will end up being megacrap.

The absence of Mary Jane and J. Jonah Jameson has kept me from watching the Amazing Spider-Man films. If they are in the third one, I will see it.

  • Jay

He really wasn’t that great, he acted as if he was in a silent movie. Just look at that over-acting still at the top of the page.

  • Joseph Cassidy

Gwen Stacey came before Mary Jane in the comics. Hopefully they will stick to those roots. And from what I have seen so far they seem to be teasing at that outcome.

  • Cellism

MJ was originally in ASM2 but she was cut because there’s so much stuff in the movie as is.

Braunrodman, ASM2 sets things up for JJJ’s appereance on the third one, in his traditional spidey hater role. I for one would love to see JK Simmons return to the role, but I do wonder how his camp performance (perfect for the Raimi films) would fit in the more ‘realistic’ universe of the Webb series.

  • Lic Guido-Visión Rosas Duarte

Pretty much everyone overacted in the Raimi movies, but that was a deliberate choice to suit his camp sensibility.I really enjoyed that approach, but I don’t know how it would work to have an actor performing in that style while the rest of the cast acts in a more realistice way (though Jamie Foxx has a couple of goofy moments in ASM2)

  • Sentry616

Given the way casting is going lately I vote for Martin Lawrence.

  • Big Grim

Just get J.K. Simmons back. He was perfect.

I loved JK Simmons’ JJJ portrayal as everyone agrees that it was spot-on for the classic boisterous Daily Bugle publisher. Although I disagree that his over-the-top antics wouldn’t fit in the ‘realistic’ Marc Webb franchise (I’ve met people like this in real life and worked with one in the past much to my chagrin).

If he does change JJJ’s persona (which is not unheard of in the constantly ‘re-imagined’ silver screen adaptations), I’d love to see someone like NCIS’ Mark Harmon take a crack at the role (someone who’s hard on Peter because he sees potential in him but loathes Spider-Man for his vigilantism). Whoever they pick, I hope they don’t go young (as seems to be the trend in Hollywood these days).

    “The answer is … I don’t know” That’s Webb’s answer to everything Spider-Man related. He doesn’t know.

  • alistaircrane

It doesn’t matter who came first. Mary Jane is Peter’s definitive and most iconic and popular love interest. She’s the Lois Lane to Gwen’s Lana Lang.

  • alistaircrane

Which is actually a relief because Shailene Woodley is so wrong for the role of MJ. Mary Jane is supposed to be a supermodel, and Shailene still looks like a little girl.

  • Cellism

I wanted to give Woodley a chance and then I mistakenly sat through Divergent. NOPE. Get Karen Gillen, only she could make up for the loss of Emma Stone in my heart.

  • alistaircrane

It won’t happen. Karen’s in Guardians of the Galaxy, a rival comic book movie. Emma Stone would have been great as MJ. I can’t think of any redheaded actresses out there now for this role.

  • Cellistic

She’s playing a villain who is bald and blue, though. It’s not exactly like she’s recognisable! :P (And Disney and Sony have shown a stronger desire to tie things together than Marvel and FOX so I wouldn’t say never just yet.)

  • Joseph Cassidy

I agree completely. The only redhead I can think of who would work if the other actors weren’t so young is Laura Prepon. She has the height, and that modelesque look to her.
