maniac cop

Eisner Award-winning comics writer Ed Brubaker has penned a remake of of the 1988 slasher/action film Maniac Cop, to be produced by Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) alongside original director William Lustig. Screen Daily reports that French distributor Wild Bunch will reveal the director later this month at Cannes.

Starring Bruce Campbell, Tom Atkins, Robert Z’Dar and Richard Roundtree, the original cult classic centers on the search for a serial killer who stalks the streets of New York City dressed as a police officer. (“But now,” the narrator says in the trailer, “the most terrifying man in the city carries a badge.”)

Best known for comics work like Criminal, Fatale and, of course, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Brubaker’s screen credits include Batman: Black and White and Angel of Death. He also wrote the screenplay for the planned adaptation of Criminal.

Heh, I love that cop. I wonder what Bru intends to do with him. Something really nasty, I hope. :)
