James Marsden on His ‘X-Men’ Future: ‘It’s Out of My Hands’

Just about every mutant that ever was is getting in on the action in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Everybody, it seems, except Cyclops.

James Marsden’s Scott Summers won’t appear in the upcoming sequel, which combines the casts of the original X-Men trilogy with the younger generation of X-Men: First Class. There’s a good reason, too — or, at least, a reason — as Cyclops died in X-Men: The Last Stand. Then again, so did Professor Xavier, yet Patrick Stewart us somehow involved in the movie. Why does Chuck get a pass, and not Scott?

Marsden isn’t dwelling on it too much, but in an interview with Crave Online, he made it clear he’d love to suit up one more time.

“I’ve always been very proud of my role and it’s out of my hands,” he said. “It’s nice to see Bryan [Singer] go back in and turn the boat a little bit. I’m happy for those that made it back. I’d like to. I get excited watching the trailers because I’m excited for the continuance of the X-Men world. I’m a fan of X-Men and I know it’ll be a kick-ass movie.”

A very diplomatic answer indeed. Perhaps we’ll see Cyclops again on the big-screen at some point down the line — just don’t count on it happening later this month.

It sucks that character got shafted so bad in X2 & X3.

  • Mike McTighe

Pretty sad. I was just thinking about this morning how Magneto and Wolverine already have a deeper relationship in the films than Scott, who’s collective screen time is probably just south of 30 minutes. Scott and Logan, who are essentially the lynchpin of the X-Men, now have less onscreen moments than a young Magneto does with Logan, a character who were never known to interact (except in that ‘First X Men’ mini they did a few years back).
Cyclops has been around since issue one. The only other character as important as him who has been underused in Angel.

  • Ozy

Must not have watched the after credits with Xmen 3 for the hint of Prof X…..but then again the movie was aweful so who would know……But we did not see Cyclops die in Xmen 3….we had that bit with Jean coming back and then nothing….we did not see it happen so easy enough to bring him back…..but then again the Xmen movies haven’t been great at following their own stories.

  • TheBatman

They treated Cyclops/James Marsden like crap in the movies. Hell, even Toad got more action scenes than him, and Toad is even back in X-Men DOFP.

Cyclops is one of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s original created X-Men. He is the First X-Man. A character that has survived the test of time, and has proven that he has staying power in the comics, cartoons, games and other form of media except the movies. The X-Movies where right from the start we know the director favored only one character(Wolverine) to hog the spotlight again and again and again.

Stan Lee, Disney and Marvel Company should act and do something about this.

  • CaptainWolverine

Until Disney gets the licensing rights back for X-Men, they can’t do anything. Same with Spiderman.

  • John Mahoney

x3 is a terrible terrible movie.

  • Count

    If

  • Count

If X-Men: Apocalypse is going to happen then they could always reincarnate him as one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen…

  • DaMak

X1, X2 AND X3. He was my favorite X-Men character, even above Wolverine and I’m still mad at how they treated him.

  • HoodFace

    They must bring Cyclops back.

  • Son_Of_Dad

    Ain’t it, though? Pure KaKa.

  • Zagreus

I thought Marsden did a good job as Cyclops. He’s just not a big name like Halle Berry, J-Law, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellan, or Patrick Stewart or Fassbender…. so there’s really no role for him in the story, so it’s easier not to bring him back. Not too complicated.

  • Son_Of_Dad

Cyclops wasn’t in then original book, as he had left in the big EXIT CYCLOPS the issue after Jean was killed. Nevertheless, the character was literally left on the fringe in all three original films and resurrected as a youth in the horrible first Wolverine film.

  • Son_Of_Dad

But it is complicated because Madsen was actually great in the role. Unlike Berry, who is not a great actress to begin with and is a terrible Kenyan Storm.

  • Jonny_anonymous

Honestly, did nobody stay for the X3 end scene? Prof X was “reborn”

  • MegaGearMax

    Jean is still dead…

  • Dalton Munnal

Most of the names you just listed owe most of their recognition to not being shafted in X-Men.

  • Dalton Munnal

Cyclops is one of the most underrated characters in comics and James Marsden was excellent. X1 and 2 were great movies, but if they both made one big mistake it was neglecting Marsden.

  • bobby

Wasn’t his body destroyed though. His mind was in a kid’s body so the point still stand s that Patrick Stewart should not be in ot but a young mutant with a Stewart voice. At least Cyclops was no body no death which is classic comics.

  • Deucifer the Sixth

Longevity isn’t the same thing as importance. Cyclops, tho is definitely one of the most important X-Men characters, Angel however is not.

  • PietroMaximoff

well, we had a lousy version of Cyclops in Wolverine Origins… so i suppose it’s better leaving him untouched

  • Zagreus

I agree that Marsden is much better than Berry. No question. But Berry will put butts in the seats. People aren’t going to the theatres to see a “James Marsden” movie. Whereas Halle Berry has a fan base… for some reason.

  • The Last Word

Except for a couple of instances in Swordfish and Monster’s Ball, I can’t imagine any reason why anyone might go see a movie because it stars Halle Berry.

  • Russkafin

Cyclops was not killed. He was transported to the DC Universe, wiped of his memory and changed his name to Richard White.

  • Zagreus

Hey, I don’t like her either, but I’m just surmising what is likely in producer’s heads. “Oscar award winning actress” Halle Berry vs James Marsden, producers are probably gonna put the screen time to Berry and cut Marsden.

  • Dusk

Fox isn’t smart enough to think about that?

  • J.p. Ducey

I’m still holding out hope that the End Credits scene will show Cyclops and Jean alive

  • Brad O’Leary

they really should bring him and Jean (Famke Jansen) back!! they never even showed him actually getting killed!! Jean’s the Pheonix so she can come back any time they want!!

  • Ushio

Wasn’t Cyclops killed off in Last Stand because Marsden wanted to do Superman Returns?

Studios don’t like there actors running off to different studios so I doubt Fox will take back a for all intents and purposes no name actor.

Also Berry was great in that one scene in ‘Die Another Day’

  • bmiddleton2

He definitely got shafted. To me, Cyclops is the X-Men. They should have called these movies “Wolverine with some X-Men in them”. I’m hoping Cyke gets another shot in X-Men: Apocalypse.

  • bibbinsbaggins

I hate the way fox has treated the Cyclops. The movies and characters have suffered because fox can’t stop sucking wolverine’s dick. It’s disgusting they way one of Marve’s oldest characters is treated and no one seems to care. All the X-men movies should have been titled Wolverine and a few mutants. I hope this movie bombs.

  • sladewilson

“…for some reason”? Have you looked at the woman? Okay, I’m in agreement that her acting skill is waaaay less than stellar, but you have to admit she’s definitely primo eye candy….

  • sladewilson

The character and actor got royally screwed. Especially the character. Cyclops is the FIRST. Period. Total disrespect

  • Edwin

    X-Men is Cyclops

  • Charles Veiman

What a shame he was just as good a Cyclops as Jackman was a Wolverine. The idiots at fox wasted a great opportunity with Marsden. If they had made Wolverine the loose cannon that he is in the comics Cyclops would have been the perfect counter just as he is in the comics.
In the comics Wolverine has near to 0 leadership skills unlike his depiction in the movies but they made him a leader just so as to be able to make the Xmen movies all about Wolverine.
In spite of the great actors the Xmen movies are in truth, a lousy depition of their source material with near to 90% of the characters badly written or their storylines and even power changed.
Cant wait for a remake, hopefully by Disney.

  • Charles Veiman

Well you can expect me to steer clear of it.
After watching X2, in hopes they would redeem themselves, I knew these Xmen movies were a lost cause.

  • Haliwood1

To me, it feels like there is someone involved in the film, someone with some authority, that has taken the stance that they know more than the public, and is keeping the character from returning. I don’t have any proof; merely speculation. But, it doesn’t make business sense that a company buys the rights to a property, and then decides not to use one of the major elements of that property.

  • Jonny_anonymous

No it wasn’t a child when you hear his new body speak it has the same voice so it’s obviously the body of his brain dead twin.

  • Poppa Dell

But because they only found his glasses doesn’t mean that he is dead. Let him have gotten hurt and picked up by Mr. Sinister and brought somewhere to be experimented on. I see a future Madeline Pryor, Cable, and Inferno growing out of it.

  • Chuck Wells

Cutting Cyclops out of the mix, yet bringing back Stewart as future Xavier makes about as much sense as, well …….. No. It doesn’t make any sense at all!

  • Gary W Muthig Jr.

yeah was talking earlier in the movie about the ethics of transferring consciousness to a coma patient and when you see him at the end it is Patrick Stewart.

  • Gary W Muthig Jr.

you never actually see that he died. I wonder if they could somehow make it like he was trapped in bubble like Jean and then some how comes back later or something

  • For Crying Out Loud

he was great as Cyclops, and Cyclops is the heart of the X Men. I’m not even a fan and I know that.

  • KofiSmiles

Really appreciate these words brotha. Right on.

  • KofiSmiles

Aye true. Still a lot could be done with Angel. Think of the stories he could open. Think Uncanny X-Force.

  • KofiSmiles

Angella Bassett should have been Storm.

  • Charles Veiman

The way Fox is making these movies, its best he remains dead or in a bubble or whatever until Disney comes and rescues the XMen.

  • Zorianff9 .

And to think that Singer claimed he’d fix the mistakes of “Last Stand”, Cyclops’ apparent death was the most scandalous mistake he must fix, for he is the most special member of the X-men and was supposed to be the REAL main character.
Unless Singer and Marsden are preparing a surprising cameo appearance, that movie can’t even be called “X-men”, rather “Wolverine: Days of Future Past”.

My Idea to have Cyclops back would be:
Wolvy meets Havok in the past, and identifies him as a member of the Summers family (distant relative), and tells him how his relative will be an important member of the X-men and will “apparently” die, so Havok says he’d show up at that moment, and then Cyclops gets a cameo appearance ALIVE at the end in the new future, revealing that he never died for Havok witnessed he suffered another fate and needed help to return.

  • 5star fornicator

I think they will recast Cyclops and Jean as teenagers in the dofp sequel, it’s already been said that the movie will focus on the First class crew so it fits into timeline that they will appear as well as Gambit hopefully and Dazzler as it will be the 80s. Then they will do X Force that will be based in the future or present day. I want Boomboom!

  • Informed Dissent

It always made me wonder what the deal between Marsden and Jackman. I was watching some interviews on either X2 or X3 and during an interview Marsden said something like ‘it all depends on Mr. Jackman’. I am paraphrasing but it seemed implied that the X movies were being custom made around Jackman.

I don’t know if Marsden was supposed to be the lead actor but after screening the X films, Wolverine (Jackman) became the obvious fan choice, thus, the entire X vehicle was made to revolve around Jackman.

Who knows but I suspect something like this occured. I for one would really like to see Marsden come back and portray Cyclops again. Cyclops is the leader of the X-Men. It makes little sense to run without him. It makes no sense at all.

  • Informed Dissent

I saw it! I was hoping Olivia Williams would reprise her Moira role again. Seems to not be the case now unfortunately.

  • Arthur Egoc

    SPOILER

    Just watch the movie…

  • Sometwo

Cyclops is one of the most important mutant (if not the most important). He depicted badly in the movies, as the comic books shown that he never gave up on life after the death of Jean. He continued being a leader even without Jean. He was strong and could also be the biggest character in the comics.

  • Sometwo

That hardly even is a scene, a really small cameo.

  • Lonnie

@Bmiddleton. YES!!! I have been saying this for years! Its nice to see others agree. It’s wollverine and the xmen and that blows hard. Cyclops has been a favorite of mine since youth! Field Leader and first xman deserves better. I like jackman but focusing all the movies on wolverine pisses me off. So it’s wolverine 1,2, and 3 and wolverine origins is how I see it. Did u see gambit in origins?! He was finished after doing one lousy move and wolverine only hit him once!!!! Wtf?! Weak these moves are….
