Hugh Jackman Reconsiders Wolverine Retirement

Don’t start mourning Hugh Jackman’s departure from the X-Men franchise just yet. According to the actor himself, his days as Wolverine aren’t quite behind him.

“At one point, you’re right, I said I was pretty sure [about leaving the role],” Jackman told IGN at the Australian premiere of X-Men: Days of Future Past. “But I’m less sure as it goes along. Because after seeing this movie, the whole thing feels fresher to me than ever. And during this movie … I don’t want to spoil anything, but it’s kind of like a clean slate, so who knows where it’s going to go. As long as I have the passion for it, and the fans will have me.”

Sounds like we could have Jackman’s Logan in our lives for quite a while yet.

For now, we can officially count on a big role for Jackman in X-Men: Days of Future Past, in theaters this weekend. Beyond that, he looks likely to return for a third solo Wolverine outing, scheduled for release in 2017.

Look, I’m fine with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. But can we PLEASE get a movie that’s not about him, Xavier, or Magneto?! I could really care less if he stays in the role or he doesn’t. FFS, why can’t we focus on literally any of the other X-Men?

  • Statham

Eh. He, along with McKellen and Stewart, are possibly the three most perfectly cast of the X-Men characters. But at the same time, I’m kind of wary of anything that can be seen as a clean slate. Jackman’s Logan clearly has a lot invested in Famke Janssen’s take on Jean, and I’m not sure cleaning that slate off would particularly work.

  • Jonas Dees

If they ever make an R-rated, Wolverine-led, X-Force movie they should recast because they have given this version (actor) of Wolverine too much morality to lead a mutant hit-squad.

  • Spyder

Great news. I knew fox could find a couple 0s to change Jackman’s mind. The man is Wolverine period.

  • Russkafin

I would like to see him keep doing it. He made a comment about adapting “Old Man Logan,” in the context I was not sure if he was serious that it was being considered or making a joke about how long he has been playing the part, but it would be fun to see.

  • Jack Saat

Indeed I’m so sick and tired of Wolverine centered storyline!

  • Kingston L

they need a wolverine movie just like wolverine origins videogame, bloody R-rated old man logan :D, wolverine killing going berserk on the big screen, with no fucks given!

  • mel

Watch the unrated version of The Wolverine. Lots of killing and swearing.

  • MychaelDarklighter

Wolverine’s not immoral. He’s a goddamned samurai fer crying out loud.

  • Jonas Dees

Just because someone is a samurai doesn’t mean they can’t make immoral decisions and kill people. There are good samurai and bad samurai and many stories littered with both kinds.

The movie Wolverine is sentimental and brooding. The Wolverine in X-Force and Uncanny X-Force is neither until the end which of the Uncanny run. This shows character development and progresses the other story lines of that time (AvXM, Wolverine and X-Men). The current “Jackman” Wolverine wouldn’t fit in as the leader of X-Force as he has been portrayed so far, it would go against the character of the role he has played for the past 12 years.

  • Justin

So basically they gave him more money to stay on….

  • TheDutchmaster

I’m sure Hugh Jackman could portray a harder, less conflicted professional killer, if the Wolverine role required it. That would be bad ass.

  • Michelle Comfort Ventress

Trying to replace Jackman with another actor is like trying to replace Sean Connery as James Bond.

  • NateDizzy

Good point. Without intending it, Jackman has somehow brought his Wolverine performance in-line with the Logan as the headmaster of the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning.

  • NateDizzy

It’s not like it’s money not well spent. Jackman clearly is not phoning in these performances; he really enjoys being Logan.

  • NateDizzy

Doesn’t FOX want a Mystique centered movie? Capitalize on Jennifer Lawrence fame and all that jazz?

  • Zorianff9 .

Every movies besides First Class don’t live up to the name “X-men” because of him, besides Cyclops the 1st member and leader of the X-men was supposed to be the front man, Wolvy should have been like the Vegeta of X-men.

  • Kingston L

yeah i did that, it was my favourite so far, but i WANT MORE! if wolverine origins was taken seriously it would of been a great movie, such a missed/wasted opportunity from the x-men 2 bloody flashbacks

  • Kingston L

i could not think of anyone who could recast as wolverine, can anyone think of anyone that matches the bub voice lol

  • Kingston L

    but his my favourite X-men

  • Gus Tavo

Hugh Jackman is the only Wolverine D: there is no one like him

  • the Dagman

He’s still too tall to be the “perfect” Wolverine. Peter Dinklage would be closer to the source to play him, Or, even better, to play Puck. But he was wasted by playing a different role.

  • Vicente Corona

I would like to see Nightcrawler, Gambit, and Grammer’s Beast.

  • DarthTigris

LOL, Wolverine in the comics is 5’3″ and Dinklage is 4’5″! No, man, no.

  • EVH

    Tom Hardy

  • Tommy Rankin

Wow, what a surprise that he is still ready to make gazillion more movies after all that talk about retiring. He must’ve renegotiated his contract with Fox quite a bit to get a hefty raise since now he’s backing up.

As much as I love Jackman’s Wolverine I’m really conflicted by this news. He is a great actor but as long as he is in the role they will concentrate all movies on his character while nobody else gets spotlight except for Mags and Prof who already are the focus in every single movie.
Producer Shuler-Donner even said that this was going to change now that Wolverine has his own solo films and yet who do we have as the central character in the second film after Wolverine was spun off to his own films? Wolverine. Come on you can’t be serious!

Honestly, if the comics were like these movies we wouldn’t have all the team books only Logan solo, Charles and Erik team up and Logan, Charles and Erik team up with maybe Mystique in the background. Why is it so hard for Fox to rotate the spotlight and concentrate on two or three characters at a time that aren’t Logan/Xavier/Magneto?!

And they’re talking about making a Mystique solo now even though major x-men haven’t had more than a fifteen minutes of screentime across all films tops. And Mystique solo would only concentrate on Mystique and nobody else so that’s not very big of an advancement.

Like I said I love Jackman’s take on Logan but as long as he is in the role we won’t get a full reboot for this franchise despite the fact that it’s in need of a reboot worse than any other movie franchise I can think of off the top of my head..

Sigh, I guess there is nothing more to do and just wait patiently that maybe some day we’ll get an actual X-Men movie that concentrates on the titular X-Men and not just Logan or Xavier/Mags but at this rate most of the current fans will be in the grave before that.

  • Tommy Rankin

Hahah, Dinklage is way too classy to play Logan! Besides. he’s much more entertaining as a bad guy

  • Tommy Rankin

    Or RDJ as Iron Man

  • Tommy Rankin

In one interview he was joking but he has talked about OML in multiple interviews and for a long time so I’m sure he’s serious. It would be fine except that OML has barely any x-characters in it. It’s all characters from other parts of the MU. How can you make OML movie without being able to use Venom; Red Skull, Spidey, Hawkeye or Hulk?
It would be really difficult to pull off without substituting almost every character with some x-character which IMO would change the story so much that they might as well not even bother with it. Maybe they could take elemnets from OML to combine with something like Wolverine: The End, cause at least there are no characters in that that they can’t use.

  • Tommy Rankin

The voice? Sure, anyone who has done VA for Logan. But if you want someone who also looks the part then I can’t come up with anyone.

  • Tommy Rankin

That’s useless to speculate as they never will do. We’ll be lucky if they even agree to do an R-rated Deadpool movie. R-rating would leave all the kiddies out and studio would see that as huge money loss so they won’t do them.

  • Warner Araújo

He can not leave the Wolverine. He is the Wolverine. That would disappoint many people. He is like John Lennon in the beatles band, you know?

He is the best actor for the role … is already established. If it no longer does the role in the movies, Wolverine dies!

You want to kill Wolverine, Sir Hugh Jackman?

  • Brian Skylar Brown

    Yyyyyyyyyyyaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy

  • Stan Li

And the Tallverine Saga goes on.

  • Jonas Dees

True, an R-rated X-Men/Mutant movie is very unlikely. But at one time a good Avengers movie was unlikely. If we can’t speculate and hope what’s the point of forums and comments :)

You *couldn’t* care less (than you do, right now, about the subject at hand). *Could* is a popular mistake.
