Here We Go Again: Jackman Clarifies Comments on Retiring Wolverine

OK, let’s go over this again: Hugh Jackman hinted that he wants to retire from playing Wolverine. Then he said he’s not so sure about retiring the character after all. And then he said he wants to be an Avenger.

So, what’s the real story? In a new interview with Vulture, the actor set the record straight on his stance on playing the adamantium-laced mutant, saying that, while he knows he’ll have to give up the claws eventually, he doesn’t see a specific end point in sight, as long as the material is up to his standards.

“I don’t know when that day will be, but I want to make sure that there’s still more for me to create that I’m still as passionate about and committed to it, and that the movies are as good,” Jackman said. “As long as all that lines up, I don’t see an end date yet.”

“I mean, I’ve seen some quotes, some of which have been accurate, some of which were misquoted, but I’ve tried to be honest,” he continued. “And the truth is, right now, I would like to be able to continue playing it, but I probably have higher standards to get me there.”

As for what his next Wolverine project might entail, Jackman teased that he’s been speaking with James Mangold about an adaptation of the Marvel comic book storyline “Old Man Logan.”

“We did look at that, because I am rapidly approaching Old Man Logan,” he joked. “It does, some mornings, feel like the most appropriate way to go. That’s in the mix of discussions, yeah.”

Old Man Logan would be hard to adapt as a 20th Century Fox movie, since the story includes a lot of characters from the Avengers (Marvel Studios) and Spider-Man (Sony Pictures).

Who would be in replace of Hulk in the movie. If Hulk was allowed this would be perfect!!

  • J.p. Ducey

You’re exactly right. Maybe they could replace Old Man Hawkeye with an Old Man Gambit or Iceman, but how to you replace the Hulk and his inbred family? Half the fun of the end was watching Hulk eat Logan and then him chest bursting out.

Since we saw a more mature Logan who has come to terms with his life and past in DOFP, I think the next Wolverine spin-off with X-23. It would be great to see him use all the wisdom he’s gained over the years to help and guide another individual who has the same struggle he overcame.

This is celebrity double-speak for “I’ll do more if they pay me according to a higher standard but as long as I can pretend in the media that I’m doing it for a higher artistic standard.”

  • Derek Metaltron

I’ve had two ideas about a solo Wolverine film, one being Old Man Logan – following on from how things ended in DOFP in the present – but another way could be a Wolverine/Mystique film inspired by the Get Mystique storyline – after all they’ve talked about giving Jenn her solo film, why not make it a duo film and have X-Men’s two biggest stars in their own story together?

We still haven’t seen Omega Red yet, for what that’s worth.

They could easily adapt Old Man Logan. Substitute the following:
    – Wendigo for Hulk
    – Omega Red for Red Skull
    – Old Gambit for Old Hawkeye

Considering we just did post-apocalyptic future (or pre-Apocalypse-ic future) I’d prefer they just not do Old Man Logan as a story. Use the character sure, but just adapt him into another story. It would be cool to do something out of the Outback run. There’s a great story where Wolverine gets X crucified by Pierce and the Reavers, and it would be nice to sneak Omega Red in there if possible.

Frankly I’d prefer they avoid it since it retreads over Days of the Future Past in some regards (post apocalyptic, bad guys win). There’s a great story from the Outback run where Wolverine gets crucified and saved by Jubilee. I’d also like to see him end up in the Savage Land.

What if, instead of adapting an already-existing story, they came up with something completely new, based upon who the character is cinematically. How would you feel about that?

  • Cathrine Jhones

he was found on beach with Jennifer Lawrence

  • mel

Use the Blob or Juggernaut, or whomever.

  • Chuck777

    They did that with Origins.

  • Chuck777

Nothing wrong with that. It takes a lot of work for a guy his age to keep a fit body like he has.
