Roland Emmerich Returns to ‘Stargate’ For New Trilogy

Roland Emmerich is set to direct a remake of his own 1994 sci-fi film Stargate, which Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures and Warner Bros. envision as the start of a new trilogy.

“The Stargate universe is one that we missed terribly, and we cannot wait to get going on imagining new adventures and situations for the trilogy,” Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin, who co-wrote the original, said in a joint statement. “This story is very close to our hearts, and getting the chance to revisit this world is in many ways like a long lost child that has found its way back home.”

Starring Kurt Russell, James Spader and Jaye Davidson, the 1994 film follows a military team that journeys through an ancient dimensional portal (the Stargate of the title), where they discover a slave civilization ruled over by an alien race posing as Egyptian gods. The movie laid the foundation for a multimedia franchise that included three live-action television series, two direct-to-DVD movies and an animated series.

Stargate created an expansive cinematic universe that has engaged fans for two decades,” Warner Bros.’ Greg Silverman said in a statement. “Under the guidance of Roland and Dean, these new films will build upon the creativity and popularity of the first film, while delivering an original film-going experience for fans and those new to the franchise.”

Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis were infinitely better than the original film ever was.

The various TV series definitely fleshed out the Stargate mythology & their departure from Emmerich & Devlin’s source material and worked to create a believable villain.

I liked the reimagining of the aliens (Goa’uld) as parasitic worms & the enforcer Jafar working as their incubators for their lower class. It’s likely that Emmerich will wipe this out in favor of their goofy bodysnatcher alien entity and that’s a shame. Nevertheless, I’ll be curious to see if anything in the SG1 version survives to the new trilogy…. but I won’t be holding my breath.
