Zack Snyder Calls Detroit Radio Show to Defend Aquaman as ‘Pretty Badass’

zack snyder

Despite persistent rumors that Jason Momoa will play Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, neither the Game of Thrones alum nor Warner Bros. will confirm the role (although he has had a little fun tweaking fans). However, today director Zack Snyder stopped just short of revealing the King of the Seven Seas will appear in a call to a Detroit radio show defending the superhero.

According to TheWrap, the host of Detroit’s 97.1 The Ticket’s “Stoney and Bill” show had been trash-talking Aquaman and his possible inclusion in the film when Snyder, on his way to the set of Batman v Superman, called to set the them straight.

“You guys were disparaging — a little bit — Aquaman … just a teensy […] I don’t want to, like, giving anything away about the movie or anything like that, but Aquaman has some cool abilities that I think people are, like, ‘Oh, what? Does he talk to animals, because that seems like what he does, or fish, or whatever?’ Snyder said. “Y’know, the cool thing is that with Aquaman, his trident — people don’t realize this — that could actually cut the flesh of Superman, if they came in contact. That’s a thing that’s in the canon. And he’s super-strong, because of course, he can exist at these super-deep depths, so when he comes up here it’s like he’s crazy strong.

“But, anyway,” he continued, “not to say he’s in my movie, or anything like that, he’s just pretty badass — he has the potential to be badass. That’s all I’m saying.”

Yes, Zack, that’s all you’re saying. TheWrap confirmed it was indeed Snyder calling. You can listen to the exchange here.

Opening March 25, 2016, Batman v Superman stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman … and probably Jason Momoa as Aquaman.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

  • Smallgenie549

    Heck yes.

  • JasonMBryant

The problem with Aquaman has always been that he doesn’t seem as useful out of the water. Superfriends did an especially bad job of this and ruined him for a generation, maybe two.

Snyder’s right. Super strength and magical weapons? That makes him just as useful in a fight as Wonder Woman or Batman. Even the talking to fish thing is powerful. Yeah, it’s easy to make jokes about, but if you *are* in the water, are you going to mess with the guy with a pet shark?

    Aquaman has a shark *army*.

  • Hypestyles

The trident originally belonged to Sub-Mariner. And sea-life telepathy.

  • lewis4510

I would think he’s got more important things to do, you know like a multi million dollar film production he’s working on.

  • Brakkart

He has much MUCH worse than sharks to mess you up with if you’re causing trouble in the water!

  • AirDave

Aquaman and J’onn J’onzz turned the (wait for it) “tide” against the Crime Syndicate in the graphic novel JLA: Earth-2. Aquaman also had some pretty good moments in the Justice series and in JLA: Liberty and Justice.

  • Evan Logan

If you would’ve took half a second to read it said he was on his way to the set….

  • heratio hufnagel

And even if he wasn’t, do you think that directors work for the entirety of their waking lives? Surely, no matter how little, he has some free time, no?

  • MegaGearMax

Aquaman’s problem is the company that he keeps. When you’re walking around the likes of Superman, Flash or Green Lantern, you aren’t as impressive.

  • Shaun Brening

“Y’know, the cool thing is that with Aquaman, his trident — people don’t realize this — that could actually cut the flesh of Superman, if they came in contact. That’s a thing that’s in the canon.”

  • Chuck777

And yet Batman is still better than all three of those guys.

  • Chuck777

    Super Friends ruined Aquaman.

People don’t realize he has super strength and super durability, or that he has really cool Atlantean gear. They just think him completely useless outside of water.

the New 52 Aquaman has really turned the tide in the comics community. Jason Mamoa and Zack Snyder will do the same in the movie.

  • todd

While it is true that the new 52 has done a great job at showing just how bad ass Aquaman is, other media adaptions before the new 52 had shown just how bad ass he was as well. There was his few appearances on Smallville, Batman: Brave and the Bold, and Young Justice. There was also Brightest Day which did a good job at showing how awesome he was.

  • xalidus

It’s important that Aquaman has a weapon that can harm Superman, because Superman is a threat to the ocean. Wait, no he isn’t. Superman saves the entire world, including the ocean. That trident is entirely useless.

  • Will of the Nerds

While I don’t really like Zack Snyder, I couldn’t agree more. I LOVE Aquaman (he’s honestly one of my top 5), and it annoys me when people make fun of him.

He’s as strong as Wonder Woman and can swim super fast, at the very least. Commanding ocean life is still very badass, even without the more exotic choices.

  • Dan

Outside of Gotham, Batman is an over-written joke. He’s going to help against Darkseid??? He can’t even put an end to a bunch of cosplayed-up wannabe gangsters!

  • Hermes
  • CogInTheWheel

Aquaman is boring, that’s why a lot of people dont care for him. It’s hard to when even the new series that’s supposed to re-invigorate the character, just feels like a water-based Superman.

Aquaman’s trident could cut Superman….okay, he could also be hurt by inanimate green stones from space (unless they changed that). Doesnt really mean much. Make the character more unique than “SuperMan of the sea” and people will start paying attention.

  • Dan Joseph Queen

You guys have obviously never read aquaman comics. He could easily kill most superheros with his ability to pull moisture from people’s body killing them pretty much instantly.

  • Dan Joseph Queen

If they choose the newer version of aquaman from the comics where he has a magical cybernetic hand then he could kill most them. If he touches someone he can pull all the water outside their body and kill them instantly as well as shoot freezing water out of his hand and create a portal to a mystical place.

  • Chuck777

Batman does not need to directly fight Darkseid to defeat him.

  • zombietag

he sounds like an idiot when the quote is written out like that haha

  • Zagreus

THAT Aquaman was good- that was the Peter David re-invented Aquaman. However, Johns didn’t care for it, and so he brought him back to I-don’t-know-what. I’m just talking personality, the voice of the character. Aquaman didn’t have much before, Peter David gave him one, he was gruff and kind of cranky, but regal and noble as well- and in a different way than Namor. Now it sounds like they are trying to pretty much make Aquaman Namor. While I think Namor rules, there is only one- and it’s a shame that they finally had a unique personality for Aquaman once- but petty writer egos at DC can’t build on great characterization when they see it. It’s very weird to me. Every one has to “put their stamp” on the character, rather than working in service to making a great story, and working in service to the character- THAT is how you make a great story. Rant over…

  • Michael Mah’moud

I never thought of New 52 Aquaman as a Namor wannabe. It showed his growth and acceptance of his role as king of the seven seas pretty well. Why he works as a member of a Justice League. Plus Geoff Johns, Dan Jurgens and Jeff Parker have brought more depth to the human side and Aquaman’s life pre Justice League while more modernization of the silver age elements. Yes he can be a gruff outsider but there has been more to his character. They used the whole lame Aquaman joke on itself. I honestly would take the Aquaman in New 52, Smallville, Brave and the Bold, Aquaman in Alex Ross Justice series and Liberty and Justice and Peter David Aquaman run over Mark Waid JLA Year One Aquaman who felt like Aquaman in name onlly (bulb wrench what was up with that?) I don’t see how New 52 Aquaman and Namor are anyway alike (barely see a similarity to Wolverine due to the Sideburns he had in the first New 52 Justice League arc)

  • Allan “Aquaman”

Aquaman is the Shit I prefer him than superman squab is insanely super strong he can jump on to skyscrapers he uses sorcery to control water Shit he can flood the whole world if he wants to magic is also Superman’s weakness he can summon any creature and his trident is unexplainably powerful!!!

  • Allan “Aquaman”

And his skin his impenetrable he freaking deflects bullets read Aquamans real powers it’ll leave everyone in awe

  • Michael Mah’moud

I don’t think he needs a cybernetic hand or magical water hand look to be cool nor does he need the Vikings look. If they do an Aquaman that’s a mix of the one in the Young Justice cartoon, Smallville, Brave and the Bold, New 52/Brightest Day, Peter David, Paul Dining/Alex Ross Liberty and Justice/Justice series and DCAU with a little bit of Jason Momoa’s character from Game of Throne and it would be perfect.

  • Alex Hayden

probably the weakest defense of the character i’ve ever heard. i’m not saying the character doesn’t deserve defending. He is cool and badass. i just think it sounds like Snyder did a bad job of doing it.

  • Studawg

Gotham and Metropolis are coastal cities so its safe to say that Aquaman is a valuable team member

  • Studawg

    Sub-mariner is marvel comics

  • Evan Logan

You say that assuming Superman, and beings like Superman, could NEVER possibly do ANYTHING to threaten Earth or it’s people? Because that’s NEVER happened in comics before EVER. Your statement is beyond retarded. It’s very important that someone be capable of taking him down and that Aquaman has the power to protect what is his. If he was just another Batman (Look at how often Gotham gets fucked over) his kingdom would have died ages ago.
