Marvel's "Jessica Jones" Will Go "All the Way Dark," Promise Rosenberg & Loeb
Teen Wolf‘s Chris Argent (JR Bourne) and generations of his family were raised to hunt werewolves. To effectively do that job, he was trained to be lethal, remain calm under pressure and keep his emotions in check. Even when Chris’ teenage daughter Allison was killed during a fight with demons at the end of Season 3, he compartmentalized the loss and ultimately left town with Isaac.
Now, with his sister Kate back from the dead and the mysterious Benefactor targeting supernatural beings, Chris has come home. However, it’s quickly becoming apparent that not all wounds heal easily.
Bourne spoke with Spinoff about Chris Argent’s return, his dysfunctional family and whether he could possibly be this season’s big villain.
Spinoff Online: Viewers have been anticipating Chris’ return ever since he left Beacons Hills last season. Where has he been all this time?
JR Bourne: Chris has been in a severe state of grief and confusion. I think this is the most confused he has ever been. He touched on it in season three about taking a break from hunting. His daughter’s death might have been the final straw for him. He’s been off dealing with that and with his sister Kate. He knows she is up to no good. He’s been busy.
That’s what is causing everything. The loss was so much. It’s put him in a state of anger, so much frustration and maybe even resentment. Where does he put it all? Where does he put that hurt? Does it go into what he was trained to do or does it go somewhere else? That is the result of the loss of his daughter.
Obviously, there are plenty of raw emotions bubbling beneath the surface. Does Chris blame Scott or Stiles for what happened to Allison?
I don’t know if he’s pinpointing anyone or if he’s looking at it as a group. It’s a great question. I don’t know if I got specific with that when I was looking at the season this year. I think it’s more of this entire world. Does he blame that rather than just one person? You’ll see.
Kate is his sister and now a were-jaguar. What are his thoughts on her transformation?
Wow. That’s everything against the code. With my wife, we did what we were meant to do as hunters. We sacrificed her. My sister realized she was about to turn. The code says you have to sacrifice yourself. It’s always been that way with the code. One of us follows the code and one doesn’t. The fact she’s turned and become this thing is against everything Chris stands for.
Can you tease how their little family reunion goes down?
It is a family reunion you definitely don’t want to be present for. You wouldn’t enjoy it. You know those family reunions you go to and then you have a drink and quickly get out of there before it gets any more comfortable or awkward? That’s us.
With Isaac gone, will Chris be bromancing it up with Derek again or spending more time with the other pack members?
There isn’t a bromance with Derek. I think we would have all liked to see that. We had some great stuff together in Season 3, but there are so many things that everybody is dealing with, not only as a group, but individually as well. We weren’t able to find that time. Argent is pretty alone.
In the next few episodes, you’re going to see the family reunion. That’s something you don’t want to miss. Pretty quickly, you’re going to see the state of mind of Argent. That’s going to be exciting and scary. And we’ll see the state of the group.
Will he becoming more of a father figure for these youngsters?
That’s interesting. I sort of thought of that as well. Again, we’re going to see too many other things going on. Everybody is too preoccupied to deal with those issues. We’re gearing up now and it just doesn’t slow down.
How will Chris’ hunting skills be put to good use?
That you are just going to have to keep watching to find out. They definitely get put to the test. I do love that stuff. There’s always action on Teen Wolf. People are going to be happy with what’s coming next.
Are Kate and the Benefactor two separate threats or will those storylines collide?
That’s a good question. I don’t know what I can say. I don’t want to give away any spoilers. Jeff [Davis] has done such an amazing job creating this multi-layered threat for everybody. It’s not going to be long before you figure that kind of stuff out.
Some speculate that Chris could be the Benefactor. Does that make sense to you?
I have come across that. There’s a long list of potential suspects for the Benefactor. There’s a long list of Beacon Hillers that could fit the M.O. I’m not surprised, but you’re just going to have to keep watching.
With roles on 13 Ghosts, Secret Circle, Exorcism of Emily Rose, Fringe, Butterfly Effect 2 and Stargate, do you naturally gravitate towards genre roles or has it just worked out that way?
It’s just worked out that way. It’s not something I aggressively went after. It really just unfolded that way. I’ve really loved it. I feel very lucky. The nature of our Teen Wolf fans is so unbelievably supportive and loyal. It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen. I’m very grateful for that.
Teen Wolf airs Mondays at 10 PM ET/PT on MTV.
