Joe Dante on Why We Haven’t Seen a New ‘Gremlins’ Movie in 25 Years

It will be 25 years in January since the theatrical release of Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Yet, in a world of endless Hollywood remakes and reboots, somehow Gizmo and his nasty nemeses have dodged the bullet — and not for lack of trying.

But Joe Dante, director of the two Gremlins films, says there are a few reasons why new installments of his horror comedy franchise haven’t seen the light of day since 1990. According to the filmmaker, there are two major hoops to jump through to bring Gremlins back to life.

“I am not involved with it,” he told The Playlist. “It’s something that we hear about every six months for the past five to 10 years. I know there have been many attempts to do it. It’s tricky because the rights are jointly owned by Warner Bros and [Steven Spielberg’s] Amblin, so you’ve got to jump through two hurdles to get your idea approved.”

Which isn’t to say that people aren’t trying. Dante says he’s aware of some “very well known people” who have attempted to make another Gremlins movie, and that plans are still in the works to get it off the ground.

“I do know, however, that there’s a script being written now,” he said, “and the tricky thing is that I’m not sure that the people making the movie now understand what the original appeal was of the first movie, which was not beloved by the studio until it started making money.”

“When they started making a sequel, they didn’t understand what we had done on the original to make it successful,” he continued. “So they hired me to come back and make the sequel. Because nobody understood it. So it will be very interesting to see what they come up with.”

I’m not sure Joe Dante understands why the first movie was so well received and beloved, judging by what Gremlins 2 was.

What is so difficult to understand about Gremlins 2? It’s a parody of Sequels right down to what is wrong with sequels in the first place.

  • dan

    And it’s great.

  • David Fullam

We don’t need another. 2 came in and proved to be the literal be all end all to sequels, not to mention being (possibly) the single greatest assault on and parody of pop culture ever made. No more sequels, no more remakes, let it rest.

    CGI Gizmo? nah..

I want a new Gremlins movie! Loved both of them and had the possible Gizmo since I was 5 years old!

please do..would be a nice, fresh change for once…need a good laugh…i believe most fans of Gremlins would be down for a new age remake..they are remaking the hell outta everything else so why not..

I think they should reboot gremlins into what it was meant to be, a hard R rated horror comedy. There was a scene where the gremlins were supposed to be bowling with human heads that was taken out of the script because the studio didn’t want anything to do with an R rating.

I don’t want a Gremlins movie in this age of franchise building and trying to make the next billion dollar movie. It won’t work. They’ll go overboard on the family friendly bits and completely miss the mark. I say let it rest with history and make something new. But they won’t.

  • Gary

Yes….a fresh change from reboots and remakes.

  • Jack Lucas

Dante screwed this series to death with the horrible sequel. These are jackass statements made by a bitter old man who hasn’t made a decent flick in over twenty years. Keep him FAR away from any further raping of the classic original film, please.

  • Erech O!

Oh, I know what it was, and it wasn’t as strong as the first movie. Nor did I care for the parody. That’s why they invented remote controls though, yeah?

If Gremilins 2 is great then so is Highlander 2

  • Liam

How would you do a Gremlin’s sequel and not have it be a rehash of the first two movies?
