With Luke Cage Cast, Terry Crews Sets His Sights on Silver Surfer

Terry Crews was long a fan favorite to play Marvel’s Luke Cage, and even periodically lobbied for the role himself. But the casting last month of Mike Colter in Netflix’s A.K.A. Jessica Jones seemingly put an end to his Hero for Hire aspirations.

However, the Brooklyn Nine-Nine star still has his eye on a superhero role — one that’s out of this world.

While participating Thursday in a Reddit AMA, Crews was asked about his favorite superhero, and which one he’d most like to play. “It’s hard to pick a favorite superhero,” he replied. “I always did love Luke Cage, and I’m really, really happy about who they cast in the Netflix version of Luke Cage. So that’s something that’s already done.

“But you know who else I’d like to play?” Crews continued. “The Silver Surfer. I always LOVED — I thought I had the build, the body, I could get on that surfboard, and if they ever do a live-action version of Silver Surfer, I think that would be perfect for me.”

Depending how Fox’s upcoming Fantastic Four reboot performs, there’s always a chance the studio could reintroduce the Herald of Galactus in the 2017 sequel. And how better to put some distance between 2007’s disappointing Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and the harder sci-fi reboot than by casting a 6-foot-3-inch, 245-pound former football player in the role originated by a somewhat less-imposing Doug Jones (with vocal assistance from Laurence Fishburne)?

In the meantime, it’s unlikely Crews will be waiting patiently by the phone for Josh Trank’s call, as he has plenty on his plate: In addition to his role on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, he hosts the syndicated Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Fox’s new World’s Funniest Fails; his big-screen action comedy Aztec Warrior bows later this year.

He must be making a joke.. He can’t be serious.

His build is all wrong for Norrin. He’s WAY to big. Doug Jones might not have been “imposing” but he’s supposed to be slim. Svelte. Doug Jones was that. He should aim for being Val-Zod or something. Someone with that massive build.

I’d love a stand-alone Silver Surfer movie, though. Fox should consider it. Guardians Of The Galaxy should have opened the flood-gates for more space-centric Marvel movies.

If they don’t get someone who’s actually silver for that role…

But in all seriousness, yeah, his build is a bit big for surfer.

I think he could pull it off. Plus it could help him stretch his acting range beyond comedy and angry. Would love to see it. But I would prefer that Marvel make it. Come on! Buy back the rights to at LEAST SS!

He should play Rage. That role would require a comedic awkwardness that Crews could easily nail.

I think he would make a better Terrax than Silver Surfer.

  • Lyle

Thinking in terms of DC, how about him playing Black Lightning?

  • RockGolf

Crews has proven a remarkably versatile comic actor, as seen in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and the Netflix season of Arrested Development. I wouldn’t put anything past him.

  • Walt Maueroeder

Nah – rather have him as John Henry/Steel

He does have the Luke Cage look and I’m pretty sure he would have nailed it too but there are still some idiots in the casting crew that does not really do much research. It also would have helped that Terry is actually a fan of Luke Cage comics so we know that he’ll do the character justice. He can move to DC and play Kilowag though.

    Green Lantern?

he would of been great as luke cage, but definitely too bulky for silver surfer.

If they hadn’t gone all teenybopper with the FF movie I would have suggested Terry for Ben Grimm.

I love Terry Crews’ work, but this doesn’t seem like a good fit, at first. Although he can play heartfelt and kind (during his brief caring and fatherly moments in Everybody Hates Chris), I don’t feel like his voice is quite right for the Sentinel of the Skyways. I always hear someone more gentle in my head when I read that character.

None of which would help him play the Silver Surfer

Silver Surfer is too serious for Crews, but if DC ever makes a JLI movie he’d be a great choice for the Scarlet Skier :)
