Funimation Entertainment announced at SXSW that it will distribute the English dub of “Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F” in theaters across North America this summer.

The company has also partnered with 20th Century Fox and Toei Animation to hold the film’s world premiere (in Japanese, with English subtitles) April 11 at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles. A limited number of tickets are available for purchase from the official website.

The 19th feature film in the animated franchise, “Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F'” marks the return of the iconic villain Frieza (hence the “F” in the title). Here’s the official synopsis:

An Earth where peace has arrived. However, remnants of Frieza’s army Sorbet and Tagoma arrive on the planet. Their goal is to revive Frieza with the dragon balls. Their dastardly wish is granted, the “F” that plans its revenge against the Saiyans is revived…!

Series creator Akira Toriyama was directly involved in the production, and is credited with the original concept, screenplay and character designs.

“Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F'” opens April 18 in Japan.

I saw Battle of Gods in theaters in my Vegeta costume.

Does it bother anyone else that Frieza’s transformation is all wrong?

  • Brian

How is I to all wrong?

  • Brian

    It, effn typo

  • Tommy Rankin

I don’t know what you mean by wrong but have to agree that it is a pretty lazy design for an all new form. They could have done more with it. But the SSJG suffered from the same problem of looking lazily put together so at least there’s consistency. And hey, we’re still getting a new DBZ release so it’s okay.

  • Tommy Rankin

Why do articles on this site constantly call the subtitle of the movie “Resurrection ‘F'” when it’s really “Resurrection OF ‘F'”? Resurrection F doesn’t even make any sense. The Fukkatsu no F would translate into English as Resurrection of F. ‘No’ is basically the same as ‘of’, correct? That’s such a an obvious mistake that it’s irritating when it’s repeated.

  • Papahrf

The translated titles are never really exactly the same. Battle of the Gods was actually called “Kami to Kami”, or “God and God”. Sometimes they’re just way off. Dead Zone is actually called “Return My Gohan” when you translate the Japanese title

  • BlastToTheFuture

Americans like to make movie titles sound intimidating, like it has a lot of excitement in it. Because some Americans are easily fooled. Resurrection F sounds more interesting than Resurrection of F.

In Japanese culture, they respect movies a ton.

  • samuel s

Oh yes! Who wants to see this one with me!?!

  • Tommy Rankin

I know that they often change the titles and it’s fine with me. (“Dead Zone” sounds way better than “Return My Gohan”) My problem with this is that the change makes the title nonsensical. ‘F’ in the title stands for Freeza so the Japanese title is “Resurrection of Freeza” which is fine but the American title is “Resurrection Freeza” which doesn’t make sense. At least change from “God and God” to “Battle of Gods” still makes sense. If they had called it Freeza Resurrected for example then the title would make sense.

  • Tommy Rankin

I do think that the change in titles is ok since a lot of Japanese shows and movies have strange or even pretty random titles that don’t really get people excited and may not even tell much about what the movie/show is about. Battle of Gods is more exciting than God and God for example
But I still don’t see how “Resurrection ‘F'” is much more dynamic and exciting than “Resurrection of ‘F'”. Only difference I can see is that the original is proper language and the other one isn’t.

  • BlastToTheFuture

That’s how Americans think. Its not more dynamic, but it goes with their formula.
In Japan, Resurrection of F would interest them, but because it carries the Dragon Ball handle.
If you heard Resurrection of F, it simply would not interest an American.
If they heard “Resurrection F”, they’d watch it because the title sounded cool. Its a baiting mechanism by movie providers.
    Examples of other movie titles:
    “Terminator: Salvation”
    “Insidious”
    “Paranormal Activity”
These movies could be bad, but many people wouldn’t care as long as they have great titles. It sucks, but I’d enjoy a DBZ movie regardless of what it was called. It could be called Sh*tstorm on ice, and I’d still watch it.

    Hello,

To all DB & DBZ fans,…………..

It’s time. This is the final straw.

We need to give Akira Toriyama an intervention. We need to stop him before he goes too far, before this gets too out of hand. He’s self destructing, and he’s desecrating his legacy for the sake of profits. He’s milking the DBZ cow for all it’s worth, and selling us out for a few zeni. He’s raping our beloved Goku right in front of us!

    HE’S RAPING HIM!

HE’S RAPING THE ENTIRE DB & DBZ FRANCHISE!

    WE MUST BOYCOTT THIS FILM!

Come on people, a child could write better scripts, a child could come up with better character designs, and a child could illustrate a better composite for the SSJ God transformation. . You can not seriously tell me with a straight face that Battle of Gods was a “good” movie? Are you freaking kidding me? Dragon Ball Evolution ranks higher in creativity than Battle of Gods. It was an absolute disgrace, complete and utter garbage. Not worthy of being called Dragon Ball Z. Not to mention, the movie wasn’t even animation, they Michael Bay’ed it for Christ sake. It should have been called Transformers Battle of Gods, because the entire film was CGI.

    And now this?

Frieza? Really Akira? What, are you taking notes from Hollywood now? Exploiting the fanbase by rehashing old rivals to generate hype and revenue. Might as well resurrect Cell, Dr Gero and Majin Buu while you’re at it. Heck why not. Fuck the fans, right? It’s all about that zeni.

And don’t even get me started on this Blue haired SSJ god.

I don’t even have any words for this. Blue hair ?

This is making me sick. My childhood is being raped right in front of me. I feel disgusted and ashamed.

I have nothing further to say, except this.

In strange aeons even the artists themselves can kill the art.

That’s why it is up to us fans to protect the art, yes, even from the artists themselves.

I’m counting on you TRUE DB and DBZ fans to do what’s right. DO NOT SUPPORT THIS FILM! DO NOT PAY TO SEE IT! BOYCOTT IT!

    And

    Fuck you Akira.

  • Tommy Rankin

Um… I don’t think you’re getting what I’m saying. What does it have to do with the Dragon Ball in itself interesting the Japanese? I doubt that a lot of people unfamiliar with DB is going to be seeing this film either way whether it’s in US or Japan. The title is just nonsensical and I seriously doubt that Resurrection F as a title makes a huge difference to if the title was Resurrection of F instead. It’s not that big of a difference whether there is ‘of’ in the title or not.

Terminator: Salvation still makes sense. And title being just one word like Insidious makes sense as does Paranormal Activity. And Resurrection of F makes sense. Resurrection F doesn’t. Resurrection of F makes sense since the movie focuses on the resurrection of F aka Freeza. Resurrection F just leaves you asking F-what? Resurrection Fuck you? Resurrection Fuck off? It sounds like the title is unfinished.

But whatever, it’s just really really a minor complaint. Nothing huge. And obviously I’ll still also be watching it as well when I get the chance.
