The circle of life continues, with Disney unveiling the first clip from its upcoming animated TV movie “The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar,” which follows the adventures of the son of Simba from 1994’s “The Lion King.”

Attendees at this weekend’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, will have a chance to watch a special preview of the movie, set to air in November on the Disney Channel ahead of a new animated series that premieres in January on Disney Junior.

Announced last year, the movie (and subsequent television series) stars Max Charles (“The Amazing Spider-Man,” “The Strain”) as the voice of Kion, who leads The Lion Guard, traditionally comprised of the bravest, strongest and fastest animals of the Pride Lands. However, Kion breaks with tradition and instead recruits his friends: Bunga (Joshua Rush), a blustery honey badger; Ono (Atticus Shaffer), a smarty-pants egret; Fuli (Diamond White), a confident cheetah; and Beshte (Dusan Brown), a friendly hippo.

“The Lion Guard” also features the return of James Earl Jones and Ernie Sabella as Mufasa and Pumbaa, as well as Kevin Schon as the voice of Timon from “The Lion King’s Timon and Pumbaa” TV series, plus new additions Rob Lowe as Simba and Gabrielle Union as Nala.

Way to go CBR for neglecting to mention the fact that it’s Disney JUNIOR in the headline, because now the FB report on this is full of the usual rigmarole of idiots and whiners.

What a pathetic attempt at squeezing every last cent out of The Lion King brand name.

    Two reactions:

    1. So Simba’s son has lion superpowers?

    2. So does the sequel where Simba and Nala had a daughter still exist or is this an alternate world type of thing?

  • Katie

So we’re just going to ignore the fact that Simba has a DAUGHTER named Kiara in Lion King 2? Way to go, Disney…

  • YoYoMa

I believe Kiara will be in show. She’ll be a teenager. I read a description of her character somewhere on the web as her being the older sibling to her younger brother Kion.

nice to hear the kids voice in something where he isn’t being whiny

  • Mike Elsner

At the end, right after the Kion the Lion roared… There was a spot of light forming into a symbol on his fur.

Did he just get a Cutie Mark?

Also, I hear that one of the villains for the cartoon will be a dentist from Minnesota.

I guess you’ve never heard of Disney Theme Parks before.

So is Lion King 2 not cannon anymore? Because I still love both of those movies! And what do they want us to do forget it never happened.

  • Jennifer King

I know. That’s my problem with this. Now if it was her son, I’d be okay with it. But I’m not.

    1. Seems to be. But it’s Disney Junior, so I guess one can excuse that. It already seems better than everything in there, so…
    2. Yes, Kiara still exists and she is the heir to the throne. The Pride lands’ royalty is the advanced and open minded. Since he will not be king, Kion will command a sort of team of animals to patrol the pride lands and solve their problems.

Please enlighten me how a new tv show aimed to toddlers and young kids will in any sense remove from your memory your feeling towards the original Lion King movie…

  • Adam

I’m actually pretty “meh” and most Disney sequels, even the few so-called good ones. But I kind of like that they’re keeping Kiara in as it’s a bit of a different dynamic then fictional royalty usually shows.

Disney/ABC just shared details on “The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar,” which will follow Kion, the second-born cub of Simba and Nala, as he assumes the role of leader of the Lion Guard, a team of animals tasked with preserving the Pride Lands.

It’s from another article. I guess it’s kinda a sequel.

he got a cutie mark :D

Not a sequel, but a TV series. Think “Aladdin” the series.

It is canon. Kiara still exists, she’s still the oldest cub of Simba and Nala, she’s still the heir to the throne. Kion is her younger brother.

Japan is doing a middle school version of “Attack on Titan” so really everybody exploits an IP when they have a hot one :p

Do you really think a theme park compares to an awfully drawn TV show for a movie written 20 years ago?

  • http://www.cogonline.net/ Digital Jedi

I think if you’re paying attention, you realize that the parks were created with the intention of stretching every Disney property’s legacy into perpetuity. Walt based the park off the cartoons, then spun more media out of the parks. And it’s always been that way.

Art is subjective. But no measure of subjectivity would censure this as badly drawn. You can hate, while still recognizing.
