George Lucas Apologizes for ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Comments

Lucas-social

Quite a few people took notice of George Lucas’ tone-deaf comment during a Charlie Rose interview that surfaced online Wednesday, when he jokingly compared Disney to “white slavers” and said that the company, who purchased Lucasfilm in 2012, wanted to do a “retro movie” with Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” On Thursday, the Star Wars franchise creator issued a statement apologizing for the “very inappropriate analogy” and said he was very proud of “Force Awakens” director J.J Abrams and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

I want to clarify my interview on the Charlie Rose Show. It was for the Kennedy Center Honors and conducted prior to the premiere of the film. I misspoke and used a very inappropriate analogy and for that I apologize.

I have been working with Disney for 40 years and chose them as the custodians of Star Wars because of my great respect for the company and Bob Iger’s leadership. Disney is doing an incredible job of taking care of and expanding the franchise. I rarely go out with statements to clarify my feelings but I feel it is important to make it clear that I am thrilled that Disney has the franchise and is moving it in such exciting directions in film, television and the parks. Most of all I’m blown away with the record breaking blockbuster success of the new movie and am very proud of JJ and Kathy.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” the first Star Wars film since Lucas sold the rights of the property to Disney, has grossed more than $1.2 billion worldwide in the first two weeks of its release. Charlie Rose’s interview with Lucas can be viewed in full below:

He should apologize for the prequel trilogy too.

  • red vector

The prequels were unnecessary and ultimately pointless as most prequels are.

  • Lex

    Atleast they are not remakes.

  • KaosNihil

    maybe LoL

  • Gregory A. Swarthout

    Zing!

  • Robert Dassler

    No. They were worse.

  • John

You and Simon Pegg should go f#ck yourselves for jumping on the anti-prequel bandwagon. Grow a brain and have an original thought.

  • John

    As was your comment nimrod.

  • Master Bumscratch

It’s a shame he had to do this. The world of the over-sensitive continues…

  • Scott Bloom

Well excuse me for having an opinion different from yours. Besides, they weren’t that good. The average score from Rotten Tomatoes is 67, average from IMDB is 6.9, only two points higher, but they still sucked.

  • Scott Bloom

He probably thought it’d bomb just like the prequel trilogy.

  • Scott Bloom

If done right, prequels could be as good as the original. Unfortunately, many prequels fail to do that.

  • Scott Bloom

    Remake or reboot?

  • unpaidpundit

Lucas has nothing to apologize for. Lucas is a genius, and J.J. Abrams isn’t fit to shine his shoes. “The Force Awakens” IS retro.

  • Scott Bloom

Seriously? Lowering yourself to petty insults?

  • 3d

I don’t think it’s over sensitive to object to a fucking SLAVERY analogy when talking about a situation where everyone involved is making a bazillion dollars. That’s just appropriate sensitivity at a stupid ass comment.

  • Scott Bloom

At least Abrams didn’t have to CGI everything in the movie.

  • Master Bumscratch

I just see it as gallows humour. Each to their own, I guess.

  • @nal surprise

Don’t forget the courageous guest account.

  • @nal surprise

Do people just go online to contradict each other? You don’t even have a real account. Seriously, why even bother writing that? How does it add anything to anything?

  • @nal surprise

Read John’s other comments on this page.

Moderator, you can get the IP despite the guest account, right?

Hey John, smile for the CBR cameras.

  • John Frum

    LOL!!!

  • Bl00dwerK

Lucas didn’t HAVE to, either. It was a choice.

  • Scott Bloom

    True.

  • Peter Parker

He sounds like a bitter ex-boyfriend.

  • TheLulzyHunter

Not going to happen, patron. The prequels are loved by a lot, including myself. :D

  • J.p. Ducey

Dang. The MOUSE got to George too.

  • The Dread Pirate Steve #812

He did roundaboutly explain why they were what they were. Lucas didn’t want to ever repeat himself with movies, outside of the trilogy set up obviously. If the prequels were going to be done by him they could not be very much like the original trilogy. I disliked Phantom Menace enough to skip the next two and now after hearing Lucas ate I wonder if it was in part of his desire not to do what I wanted, make another movie like Empire Strikes Back…

  • Jeff Haskell

The anti-prequel bandwagon? No sir, if you are in favor of the prequels that is the hipster bandwagon. The bandwagon is the thing people do when they are following others. The rest of us are already here. Those movies sucked in so many ways that they cannot be described in one post. YOU must prove that they were good, because one must only watch them, to know they were bad.

  • Jeff Haskell

You can love them, for sure. But you can never say they’re good movies, because they are not. They’re terrible. Bad acting, bad directing, bad writing. The only good thing about them was the effects.

  • Jeff Haskell

A bad choice. Like writing them, and only filming one take… a series of bad choices that led to sub-par movies.

  • dilando albatau

Abrams gave Star Wars a new lease on life. A franchise that went from a science-fiction corner stone to a science-fiction joke. His was not an enviable task. He most probably couldn’t do what he wanted and had people breathing down his neck. Still, he rose up to the challenge. Now the audience is excited for Star Wars again and the way is open for whatever Disney wants to do next. I wouldn’t call it a reboot. I’d call it CPR.

I support his original comments. As a film maker, he has the penultimate valid point. But he’s conveying ideas that are not mainstream and in general will always be taken out of context. But you know how it is these days, nobody can say what they want, they always have to come back and offer up an apology if they want to work in the industry run by “white slavers”.

  • http://chunksie101.blogspot.com/ E.r. Baine

Starwars: The Force Awakens wasn’t a reboot – it was old recycle material of the original. Nothing new, completely textbook. It will be an embarrassment if it wins any awards. It is an awesome HEA, but don’t call it a comeback. Call it a waste of enthusiasm for cinematic achievement. Both my enthusiasm and the rest of the world’s enthusiasm was wasted, but it is great mass entertainment, and nothing more. And at the end of the day, technically, money making wise, there is nothing wrong with that.

  • http://chunksie101.blogspot.com/ E.r. Baine

If you listen to hip hop the term is used in some way shape or form all the time. Disney is the ‘white slavers’ of the Hollywood industry. It has nothing with them being racist, or slave owners, just that they are the big wigs at the top. It is a cultural ethnic metaphor. The only question is, since George Lucas is white, does he have the right to use it? Hip hop reference a lot to Jews and Media Moguls being ‘the man’ and slave owners, but those rappers are black. You could get some black people out there starting to comment that he doesn’t have the right to use the term since he is white. But generally, Disney is the white slaver of society. But so is Sony, Warren Buffet, Warner Bros….get my point? It is a philosophical term, not meant to cast Disney in a bad light. I’m sorry he apologized for the comment, he has a right to say what he thinks. I have never heard a rapper who curses out another rapper or a media mogul on a track come back and say they are sorry for what they said, each party would say that the other is fair game. It blows that these days creators can’t say anything against the WB, DC, Disney and still make it in Hollywood. Disney should be the one to come out and say that George Lucas is entitled to his opinion.

  • http://chunksie101.blogspot.com/ E.r. Baine

I liked them. I sincerely care more about a movie or book that features the central style of the creator. Star Wars by anyone else but George Lucas is not Star Wars, just a lucrative money making machine. I’m also a fan of experimental film, fyi George Lucas’s study of experimental film gave us Darth Vader and General Grievous. I am eager to see what else he does. I know that star wars was his baby, but his prowess in film making is wasted in main stream cinema.

  • Diarra Harris

It’s never good to say someone is a slaver. Also George you DID sell your intellectual property to them so….

  • http://chunksie101.blogspot.com/ E.r. Baine

I know, it is so weird that the idea that everyone hated the prequels has become fact, when reality is far from it. I liked all the star wars movies.

  • Dan

If it’s a word that’s not trademarked, then EVERYBODY has a right to use it. I don’t care what the word is.

  • Dan

Crybaby Nation. The “retro” comment was 100% accurate–old plot, copies of old characters, old style of movie-making. The “slavers” comment was a fair statement since this movie shows Disney is only interested in what money the franchise can make–with no respect to the story. Lucas took risks (not all turned out well) and kept moving SW forward in both story and design and cinematography. So of course this movie isn’t going to be his cup of tea.

  • TheLulzyHunter

“You can love them, for sure. But you can never say they’re good movies, because they are not.”

Or else you’ll what, whine some more? Try and stop me, LOL. XD

They are definitely good films to me. :)

“They’re terrible. Bad acting, bad directing, bad writing. The only good thing about them was the effects.”

They’re great. Good acting, good directing, good writing. The only good thing about them was almost everything. ;)

  • Dan

Anybody could have made the movie we got. And if Lucas has made it himself, despite the distaste for the prequels, it would ALSO have made a billion dollars (but not as fast). SW didn’t need anything Abrams did in particular to be a hot movie this year.

  • Dan

Absolutely true. The “hate” for the prequels is an internet invention. People are sheep.

  • Dan

67 = sucks? Bit of a stretch, that. Are you so spoiled that everything must be a 9 to even be “good’?

  • Dan

The whole backstory of Vader only hurt the character, imo. But I did enjoy the backstory of Palpatine and the Jedi.

  • Scott Bloom

9? Hardly. I enjoyed the animated film Turok: Son of Stone and that got a 6.5 on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes users gave it a 3.2, but that was a solo movie.

Now if we compare the Lord of the Rings trilogy with the Hobbit trilogy, on Rotten Tomatoes, the former received an average of 94% while the latter got an average of 66%. Does that mean that I hated the Hobbit trilogy? No. I’m just showing how people rated these movies. I enjoyed that prequel trilogy.

I didn’t hate the Star Wars prequel trilogy because of ratings, I hated them for my own reasons, many of which are shared by others.

If you enjoyed them, fine, but don’t expect everyone to agree with you if you go around screaming that they were the best movies in the franchise.

  • Scott Bloom

You like them and that’s fine. I don’t

  • TheLulzyHunter

It is cool, you are being civil about it.

  • yeahyeah

I swear if I was in the public eye today, my two most common statements would be “no comment” and “I’m not apologizing so you can just forget that.”

  • Jim

Cause they really care? The only person that gives a damn about John being a guest is you.
    Stfu.

  • John

Fuck off nimrod. Unless your name actually is anal surprise you are full if shit.

  • John

Yeah you deserve a medal of valour for having an account with a fucking stupid name.

  • http://www.oldsql.pl Adam Markowski

Sadly while in original trilogy Jedi were more interesting concept due to how little we knew about them, in prequels they decided to write them as characters from chinesse fantasy movie.

  • Joe

I just saw the movie… he’s got nothing to apologize for. Oh My GOD!
    The evil space-Nazi people! RAAARH!

  • Andy Young

“Good acting, good directing, good writing.” Must be a troll comment!

  • Andy Young

The hate is not invented, they’re just not very good films, I kind of enjoy them as star wars movies but they’re still bad movies. The scripts are pretty bad, characters pretty bad, directing pretty bad, they just didn’t connect with folks on the level the originals did or for that matter the new one does.

  • @nal surprise

At least it’s not a guest account. =)

  • @nal surprise

Keep displaying those true colors, “John”. And you will continue to receive the respect they deserve. =) Love ya, man.

  • @nal surprise

    Hi John. =)

  • TheLulzyHunter

Nope, it is all personal opinion, scrub. :D

Also, you think I am trolling, yet you respond and give me attention.

Great logic there, scrub (sarcasm). XD

  • Anthony DiPaola

    Happy to hear this.
Your creation is in good hands, George. All is forgiven and I’m glad you enjoyed The Force Awakens as much as we did. :)

  • Scott Bloom is a Fool

    fuck you

Seriously? That was the best one-liner you could come up with?

  • Jo

The prequels had there moments just like the original trilogy it’s moments. It shouldn’t matter cause you seen them right. Bet you’ll complain about the force awaken as well. Just cause most star wars live up to the pointless imagine on how you thought it turn out to be don’t you have to bitch about something every chance you get.

How does having a real account all of a sudden validate or add anything. If this guest account was saying something you agreed with you’d be nodding your stupid head and not whining about how it’s not a “real account”.
