Fans weren’t the only ones to mourn the loss of Captain Steve Hiller from “Independence Day,” as it turns out Will Smith — the actor who portrayed the charismatic, cigar-chomping, catchphrase-spewing character from the 1996 blockbuster — has admitted, “It was terrible when I found out my character died.”

Smith told Yahoo! News, “The [“Independence Day: Resurgence”] trailer looks really cool…I’m going to be sitting around with tears in my eyes when that one comes out.”

The “I Am Legend” star says he didn’t return for “Independence Day: Resurgence” because he was working on “Suicide Squad” when the movie went into production. However, he does admit that director Roland Emmerich discussed the project several times prior, saying, “Roland [Emmerich] and I had talked about it.”

The death of Captain Hiller was revealed on the “Independence Day: Resurgence” viral site, which writes, “While test piloting the ESD’s first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller…Hiller’s valor in the War of ’96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership lead directly to the enemy’s defeat. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and his son Dylan.”

“Independence Day: Resurgence” is set for a June 24 release.

He’s not really dead. As long as we remember him.

I guess the fat lady finally sang….

But isn’t that just the way with Will? He vehemently doesn’t want to be in something, then it turns out that thing might look cool, and he publicly regrets it. Always crashing in the same alien hybrid fighter, this guy.

He also said the sci-fi concept combined with the father/son dynamic was too close to what he’d just done in After Earth.
    Lots of excuses…

if the film is a hit and they make a sequel he can/may return. They will simply say he was/is held captive.

  • matevenodos .

unless they be showin me da body imma gonna half ta assume he be s alive ! lol

  • Doug Rogers

From what I read he wanted way too much money to return so they killed his character off as retribution. It was nothing to do with him being in SS.

Will needs to be in a Marvel film. He can play Adam Brashear.

  • Rhys

From what I heard he wasn’t in it because they wouldn’t give his son a major part.

  • Damien Toler

You lose some …You Win some….Concussion is being critically acclaimed and Suicide Squad is highly anticipated….I heard that he dose’nt want to do any sequels after the Men in Black franchise tanked….he is the reason why Bad Boys III has been put on the back burner…Martin Lawrence said the script is done and everybody is waiting on Will to say yes!

It just seems like a poorly thought out exit for the character.

or he crashed landed somewhere with no cell reception/ radio was broke, he was injured in the crash, suffered amnesia and was nursed back to health by someone, then when all hell broke loose again (id:r) it jogged his memory and he remembered everything, but too late to help out. on another note there was a rumour when this got the green light a third movie was hinted at to make it a trilogy.

rumours are rumours…. once they get a bit of attention people think they are fact, when they may not be.
