Fan Petition Calls For George Lucas’ Return to ‘Star Wars’

Although George Lucas has made it clear he isn’t interested in directing another “Star Wars” film, some dedicated fans are determined to convince Disney he’s the right man for “Episode IX.”

A petition launched on asked the entertainment giant to “Bring back George Lucas for the ‘Star Wars’ movies.” “Put the father of the franchise as director of Episode IX,” writes organizer Yuri Luiz. “We really want this, please.”

Addressed to Disney, Lucasfilm and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, the petition states that while the undersigned have no problem with “Jurassic World” director Colin Trevorrow, they don’t think he’s suited to helm the final film in the new trilogy: ” George Lucas as director of Episode IX would be the perfect way to end this new trilogy and make an epic farewell between the Father of ‘Star Wars’ and the whole universe of the galaxy far, far away …”

To date, the petition has drawn 826 supporters, who have an uphill battle ahead of them.

Lucas has said he wants leave major motion pictures and to return to smaller, “experimental” films. He’s also stated that he and Disney don’t share the same vision for the “Star Wars” franchise. “They wanted to do a retro movie,” he said of “The Force Awakens.” “I don’t like that.”

There’s also the matter of that “white slavers” comment, which probably didn’t win him any additional friends at Disney. (He’s since apologized.)

I don’t like sand. It’s coarse and rough and irritating and it gets
everywhere. Not like here. Here everything is soft and smooth.

  • MacW ✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ

    “A petition launched on…”
    Oh that’s adorable.

  • Misscar

Are these the same people who asked him to leave after the prequels? Some people can never be happy.

  • Baron

Does it make you throw up in your mouth a little when people using petitions for tripe like this?

  • red vector

After his “White slavers” comment he’s lucky that they even let him into a theater to even see a Star Wars movie.

  • Ben Phillips

Lucas is the worst thing for Star Wars (I know how is sounds but it’s TRUE), everything but the initial ‘nudge’ was thanks to everyone else who was attached to Star Wars.

  • Rass

Lucas sold the franchise, and it’s in better hands now, given the poorly written botch-jobs he did with the prequels and The Clone Wars. Those who created this ridiculous petition need to grow up.

  • Rass

Very much so. Those who create petitions like this one are self-entitled ass-hats with no concept of what actually matters.

  • Luke Foord

Not bothered tbh but I do like the idea of him getting a farewell by doing the final of the trilogy. I just feel it would be weird without his input on the preceding two episodes.

  • penguintruth

    So masochists, then?

  • Jeff Gutman

In the words of Darth Vader, “Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!”

  • Gimme Some Like

We don’t want that! I’d go for employee executive producer…just for 9 Lol

  • matt

as producer fine. As director no way. Are these people insane. Lucas is a good producer. It’s been shown repeatedly that he is a poor director.

  • Brian Langlois

I love Lucas, but he has moved on. Even he recognized that if the franchise was to live on then new blood must be allowed to take it on. I appreciate all he’s done, but there’s no need for him to come back (and I say that as a prequel lover). I’d rather Disney give George the green-light to direct a NEW concept. I’d be first in line to see it.

  • Batt Damon

Anything would be better than Trevorrow.

  • Matt Vaughn

Wait, are they aware that Lucas made the prequels? And reworked the originals to devastating effect?

  • KLD

Annnnd… for the next petition I humbly ask: BRING BACK JAR JAR. Greatest hero in this galaxy and those far far away.

  • Catbunny
  • Alex

Poor director, poor writer. I would have been happy for him to remain involved in Star Wars, though, because there’s no escaping the fact that he certainly had some great ideas for it. Even the prequels have great ideas – the movies themselves just do a terrible job of doing them justice because unlike the original trilogy, Lucas was given unlimited powaaaah.

I’d have been interested to see what The Force Awakens would have been like if Lucas was still producer, because I actually think it would still have been an excellent movie.

  • Marijuana

I swear, I had nothing to do with this.

    Your Pal,

  • Walter

I would love for him to be an idea man.

  • Whatanidiotyouare

Just no! His time has passed.

  • jasonbasa

I am going to launch a petition on to make Chicken the color Aqua. I am tired of it being white. 2500 signers and we are golden. Lets make it happen guys.

  • Jman2113

Who’s doing this? Fuck them to the ends of the earth. 7 wasn’t the greatest, but it was a breath of fresh air considering the bullshit Lucas put us through with the prequels.

  • xsikal

    No thank you.

  • Sean

I don’t mind him doing another Star Wars in terms of a spin off movie, but I don’t want him anywhere near a Trilogy. I do however think Trevorrow isn’t suited just yet given Jurassic World. Alex Garland would make a better movie, I think.

  • Mrplatitude

    This is really dumb.

  • Dowell Eugenio

I am not going to berate the folks who are petitioning this (beyond using for something so vapid). I am more annoyed that this is being reported on at all– 826 supporters of a petition is not noteworthy.

  • FierceBadRabbit

Umm… if you want him to submit another plot outline or something, that’s cool. But please, for the love of God, keep him as far away from the director’s chair as possible!

Haha… fortunately there’s basically no chance of this ever happening.

  • butters911

Is there a petition we can sign so this doesn’t happen? Like a Force petition to counter this evil one?

  • Michael Pullmann

I’d rather the movie not blow chunks.

  • Alex W
  • Jason Tadd Jackson

Do they not remember the last star wars movie he directed?

  • Roger

826 people need to be shot.

  • ArTwoDeeTwo

    Idea of Lucas is fine,
but JJ Abrams should do SW8 & SW9. He earned it.

  • Larry Tate

    probably not.

  • FriendofYou

Yeah, it is bad dialogue. But remember, Anakin comes from Tatooine, a sand planet. He is frustrated at life but with Padme, everything seems better. It reveals a lot about how he views Padme as his chance to overcome the pains of his childhood.

  • AngelsandDemons1

Or….it was all a ploy to irk the great architect….to infuse the fever, the rage, to turn the once Star Wars King…who had abused his power with the infernal prequels…now dejected by his child, he will now return with righteous indignation to make a film GREAT again beneath these wretched stars!

  • AngelsandDemons1

Not at all…makes me want to take a piss

  • AngelsandDemons1

not the worst thing if he’s is now fueled with the FEVER and the RAGE that turns poor film makers into great ones!

  • mel

It’s also why Luke is taken there as a baby. Sand reminds Anakin of when he was a slave and when his mom died. Too many bad memories.

  • mel

More like a breath of fresh ass.

  • Mikel John

Thank you, I was looking for someone to say this. I bet we could get way more votes.

  • Bryan John Sauriol

The last thing we need is another two and half hours of shot/reverse shot and occasionally standing up to look out a window while delivering the worst dialogue ever written.

  • Khel

I think calling it a fan petition is misleading, because anyone who would seriously want this to happen doesn’t deserve to be called a fan.

  • ThuNiCo

This is all I have to say, and I will send this to the person who organized this petition:

  • Chrono
  • Halpheus

Personally I want anyone other than Colin Trevorrow to direct that one. After seeing Jurassic World I’m really afraid by what he might do with Star Wars.

  • Halpheus

    that’s for sure.

  • C0ld

Perhaps they’re referring to fans of George Lucas as opposed to the Star Wars movies?

  • Halpheus

He should at least direct 9, considering that Trevorrow makes shitty movies and that Johnson is already working on 8. But I believe he is the one who turned it down.

  • John Bryan

… he should have thought of this when he decided he could no longer milk the cash cow, and sold rights for 4.5 billion… Poor Georgie…

  • C0ld

Sentimentally? Yeah… Sure… He created the universe, directed the first one. “So wouldn’t it be ‘nice’ for him to have the final word on the SWU?” It’s a quaint, storybook idea.

Realistically? Not so much. As much as I would have liked for him to be an ideas guy, it seems he and Disney are not reading the same book (forget the same page). And I think Mr. Lucas has made his peace and moved on. Add to that the fact that Disney’s plans appear to be are more ambitious than just the new trilogy, it’s a brave soul who claims IX will be the final word?

I guess we’ll just have to wonder what his version might have been. For my money, based on the prequels and the enhanced ultra super awesome extra cantina originals, I’m kinda glad it’s left a mystery. But who knows? Perhaps we get another “The Star Wars” style comic book series out of it somewhere down the road?

  • Master Bumscratch

I’d like to see what Lucas could do with a decent scriptwriter by his side.

That said, this petition is pointless, because the man himself more than likely wouldn’t come back.

  • Matthias

  • Spike Prime

WTF, why does anyone want him there??? He’s an incompetent control freak who can’t write.

  • Euromusic fan

This is not a trilogy that is the problem with Ep 7. Star Wars is a saga with nine chapters. TFA is okay but it doesn’t sit well following ROTJ – it is the last third of the story and it all needs to gel.

  • doctortom

How about a petition for the White House to issue a decree that Han shot first?

  • Sean

You’ll think different when they eventually announce X, XI, and XII

  • Ken Cheshire

    Hell No!!

  • Holly_Wight

“Petition to Completely Ignore the Petition to Bring Back George Lucas to Direct the Star Wars Movies”

  • LiberalVeteran

They sure as hell don’t speak for me. Lucas screwed the prequels all to hell and then butchered the rereleases of the originals.

  • murphy b.

He is the father of Star Wars and it would only be fitting he finished it!! He did a great job with the Clone Wars!
The only reason Colin Trevorrow set box office records with Jurassic
World was because is was a continuation of the Jurassic Park series!!!
In all honesty, Jurassic World sucked!! Yes seeing dinosaurs eat people
is always fun but the characters in the movie sucked, you felt nothing for them except maybe the character Owen, he was pretty cool, but I would
have just shrugged if he was eaten. We are seriously huge Jurassic park
fans too, what a let down. If I were to go by how bad Jurassic World was
I say hell no to Colin Trevorrow!
