‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ Director Colin Trevorrow Addresses Rey’s Parentage

“Jurassic World” director Colin Trevorrow is preparing to take the reins for “Star Wars: Episode IX (despite fan outcries), and — while he wouldn’t outright spoil who Rey’s parents are — he did promise fans would be satisfied with the answer.

“We’re going to make sure that that answer is deeply and profoundly satisfying,” Trevorrow told EntertainmentTonight.

“Rey is a character that is important in this universe, not just in the context of ‘The Force Awakens,’ but in the entire galaxy,” he added. “She deserves it. We’ll make sure that that answer is something that feels like it was something that happened a long time ago, far away, and we’re just telling you what happened.”

“What’s interesting is I’m not creating a host of new characters,” he continued. “I have a lot of characters that people really love that we’re going to make sure are all honored. No one’s going to be left behind.”

“[‘Episode IX’] is something that needs to honor a story that’s been told over a period of 40 years… I don’t want to ignore any of it, and I respect all of it. It’s something I think the fan base is going to embrace,” he concluded.

Directed by J.J. Abrams, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” stars franchise veterans Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker, joined by newcomers John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie and Max von Sydow. The film is now playing in theaters.

Trevorrow can’t keep his mouth shut about anything can he?

  • Uncle Yetibacca

I just want to know if she is Luke’s daughter or not.

    That’s all I ask.

  • TallBoy6t6

Considering how much the movie parallels her with Luke – I’m gonna go with a solid “yup” on that one.

  • mmmGadgets

    She’s definitely a Kenobi

  • easeone

Important in the entire galaxy eh? So she’s palpatines descendant

  • modok baby

These comments are just the worst. It plays up the significance of the parentage “mystery” way more than the movie even does, making it seem highly unlikely that the fans who are going crazy over that point will ever be satisfied with whatever the answer is, let alone “deeply” or “profoundly.”

I guess Rian Johnson has his work cut out for him to tell a story that provides any context for why it matters who her parents are. (As in, if someone just told us the answer today, it would have no effect beyond “whoa, so she’s related to this other character! Crazy! Now we know!” How it affects the characters, beyond just the knowledge of it, is what will make it work or not.)

It’s obvious she’s Darth Darth binks force child

  • Tydeus

All 40 years of it? So he’s going to be including the now “Legends” EU? Didn’t think so. She’s likely to be a Skywalker, something as simple and quickly thrown together as that. Lets not put much thought into it or attempt something new!

  • Donald J.

She is actually my child. I had her when I was drunk but didn’t want to pay child support.

  • Let’sBeFriends

I actually hope it’s not that obvious. Plus if Leia really knew who Rey was, she played it pretty cool.

  • HumorPrint

She was too busy trying to keep those dentures in…

  • Dan

So Ep 8 isn’t going to give us any information either. So I gotta wait 2 yrs for another ‘set up’ movie? This crap’s old already.

  • Dan

If it’s not Luke, then why is she crying at the end of Ep7?

  • Terrormaster

I believe TFA left enough clues to come to that conclusion more so than any of the other nonsense theories I’ve seen such as her being a Kenobi. The numerical films have always been and always will be about the Skywalkers. The anthology films will expand outside of them. No. The real question isn’t who her father is… The real question we all need to be asking is “Who is Rey’s mother”?

  • Lccf

That’s what I feared too, but I hope not … maybe that means that the revelation comes at the end of VIII, and IX builds upon it ( like V and VI ), which is why Trevorrow knows about it ?
If VIII doesn’t indeed give us any clue, I’ll join you in complaining.

  • mel

of course, she inherited his accent…

  • mel

that bastard made her climb that cliff

  • Yeah
  • wkj1970

Did you see how long it took her to get up there?

  • Gian Gilbert Gonzales

wow, yeah sure why not.. But…

“The Saga films focus on the Skywalker family saga,” she explains. “The stories follow a linear narrative that connects to the previous six films. The Force Awakens follows Return of the Jedi and continues that generational story. The Anthology films offer opportunities to explore fresh characters, new storylines and a variety of genres inside the Star Wars universe.”

From Kathleen Kennedy, for your information she runs Star Wars too

  • Cason Pilliod

The only theory that relies on given information, and less on hopeful speculation. http://www.afhub.com/a-theory-awakens/

  • Terrormaster

Not sure if you’re agreeing or disagreeing with me. By numerical films I mean the sagas (1-3, 4-6, and 7-9). My statement above is very much in line with that quote from Kathleen Kennedy.

  • Halpheus

Dude that’s exactly what he said.

  • Halpheus

    total nonsense.
