‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ VFX Reel Shows Stunning Before & After

imax-sw2

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is shaping up to be one of the highest grossing films of all-time. That’s due in no small part to the stunning amount of visual effects used in the film.

The visual effects reel below shows dozens of scenes from the film, side by side with their visual and practical effects. Some of the scenes were digital composites, with the actors on location and large set pieces added in behind them. A few scenes were entirely digital, like when Finn and Poe steal the tie-fighter. The video shows the crashed Super Star Destroyers on Jakku, the Millennium Falcon, even the bridge scene near the end of the film with Kylo Ren.

The motion capture scenes in particular stand out, such as how Supreme Leader Snoke was conjured by the VFX team turning Andy Serkis’ image and performance into the menacing and mangled new villain. Maz Kanata also comes to life through the magic of VFX and the performance of Lupita Nyong’o.
