Despite the snowstorm hitting much of the East Coast, 20th Century Fox’s “The Revenant” managed to nab the top spot at the weekend box office, Variety reports. The Alejandro Inarritu-directed pic earned $16 million this weekend from 3,711 locations, for a domestic total of $119 million.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” came in second place for its sixth weekend, domestically, bringing the stateside gross to $880 million — $14.3 million of which from this weekend — placing the film just behind “Avatar” as the second highest-grossing movie of all time in North America.
According to Deadline, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has amassed $1.94 billion globally, passing “Jurassic World” — making it now the fourth highest-grossing movie of all time overseas, behind “Avatar,” “The Titanic,” and “Furious 7,” respectively.
Rounding out the top five at the domestic box office, Universal’s “Ride Along 2″ finished in third with a $13 million intake, followed by Lionsgate’s “Dirty Grandpa” with $11.5 million, and STX Entertainment’s horror-thriller “The Boy” in fifth with $11.3 million.
