Scarlett Johansson’s ‘Ghost in the Shell’ Moves From Disney to Paramount

The live-action adaptation of “Ghost in the Shell” will now be distributed by Paramount Pictures instead of Disney.

The move comes after Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks Pictures ended its agreement with Disney and moved to Universal Pictures. Paramount is co-financing the film.

Based on Masamune Shirow’s seminal cyberpunk manga and the subsequent anime franchise, “Ghost in the Shell” centers on Public Security Section 9, a counter-cyberterrorist organization in near-future Japan led by Major Motoko Kusanagi.

Directed by Rupert Sanders (“Snow White and the Huntsman”), the film stars Scarlett Johansson and Pilou Asbæk. It’s set to open March 31, 2017.

Talk about a movie no one wants. She needs to be lobbying Disney for a Black Widow solo movie instead.

  • The Fox

well its official, its going to flop.
    Paramount ruin everything

  • red vector

A Black Widow movie is not going to happen. She just doesn’t have a large enough fan base to sustain a solo film.

  • The Fox

black widow has garnered much more support from the MCU and

Johansson does have a large fan base on her own

  • red vector

With a Captain Marvel film and Wasp as a co-lead in the AM sequel on the schedule a Black Widow film isn’t in the cards. Disney’s plate is full with female lead CBM’S.

  • Ushio

It was always going to flop and Disney have plenty of big budget bombs to there name

    2015 Tomorrowland
    2013 The Lone Ranger
    2012 John Carter
    2011 Mars Needs Moms

    and it just goes on

  • The Fox

paramount in the last two years have had the following movies that never saw profit after marketing and distribution is factored in

    Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit
    Top Five
    The Gambler
    Project Almanac
    Hot Tub Time Machine 2
    Terminator Genisys
    Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension
Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse
    Daddy’s Home

Scarlett is here in Wellington, New Zealand about to start making ” Ghost in the Shell “.. it’s wonderful having her here :)

  • Joe Sycamore

Can’t wait for this movie. Anything with Scarlett in is going to be interesting

Even if the live-action movie was appreciated – why the hell would she be starred? Aren’t there any better actresses? An epic fail, in my humble opinion…

I am fan of the original anime, looking forward, what they do with this. Potential is clearly there, they just have to keep in mind, it will not work as generic action movie. But if they did their homework and actually studied the originals, and whit what they work and how they work, it should be at least decent movie. Good complexly deep story is essential via event progression and unraveling of related (of first look unrelated) subjects… big puzzle of events which at last falls together… it’s basically (well, not really, but something similar between those two is there) a detective story viewed through looking glass nested around real natural world dipped in big chunk of technology, which serves as all manners and reasons…and of course, it’s human as fuck! :) …

(looking glass for humanity? story of individuality of some? independence of artificial awareness? rage against common order? anomaly in network causing some population massive phenomenon?

    surprise me,

there is lots of stuffs around us, what’s that one, that really troubles you? why does the troubles of one matters anyway, right? ..of course, they matter… why is that? because someone cares! …that’s all you got? well,…kinda…but don’t worry, it’s not as little as you might think in first blink while…)

GitS has long been one of my favorite “Mental Floss” stories. I even liked the Arise prequel stories… If the original material is followed, Scarlett’s got the ability to pull it off. If they dummy it down, attempt to rewrite it, or sexy it up, they will fall flat on their faces.

  • Ushio

Where did you get information that those films where not profitable? most of them made money not as much as paramount would like but profitable.

Daddy’s Home $200 million on a $50 million budget and it hasn’t even finished international release yet so I know your just a full of s**t Disney fanboy.

  • Same As Always

Yes she does. Where have you been in the last few years?

  • ElfirBFG

She’s not who I picture as the Major, but I agree that if given the right material to work with, she _can_ pull it off.

It’s the monologues that are going to make or break this film for me. If they dumb those down or take them out and make it pure action it’s just going fail as a GitS film. GitS without existentialism is just not GitS.

  • The Fox

you accept gross minus expenses is = profit?

Gross is worked out with distribution, international distribution is at 55% of the gross international, domestic is at 35% of domestic gross, the cinemas keep that.
Marketing is half production budget but some films often exceed that, especially if they expected to be blockbuster films.
then budgets need to be taken into account.

  • ThePokeMaster

But do we really need a retread of the original material in live action form?
At best it may get close, but never be as good as previous iterations of GitS.

There’s this small but effect heavy movie that she did called Lucy which only cost $40 million but grossed over $400 million, Do a straight non-superhero spy movie set in the MCU for under RM$50 mil.

  • Beryl Autumnramble

Scarlet Johansson is playing Motoko? Will they use make-up and/or SFX on her like in The Cloud Atlas?

  • Tachikoma

I fear the worst for this film, I have been a huge Ghost in the Shell fan for years and would rather see a Stand Alone Complex 3rd Gig made instead

  • extreme133

I don’t know if I should be happy or be revolting anymore…

  • フィリップ オルソン

    gotta keep it real
