Gwendoline Christie Will Be Back for ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’

Gwendoline Christie has confirmed that she will be back for “Star Wars: Episode VIII” to reprise her role as the well-armored Captain Phasma. While speaking to People Magazine on the red carpet last night at the 22nd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, Christie was asked if she would be back for “Star Wars: Episode VIII.” Christie replied, “I will be in the next Star Wars movie. I think that’s an exclusive, actually.”

“Star Wars: Episode VIII” reportedly started filming in January of this year, so it makes sense that Christie would know if she was needed for new scenes.  Despite being on the Starkiller Base when it blew up at the end of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” Captain Phasma will apparently live again. Hopefully she’ll have an expanded role in “Episode VIII.”

The next “Star Wars” movie to hit theaters is the anthology prequel film “Rogue One,” which opens December 16, 2016. “Star Wars: Episode VIII” will debut the following year, on December 15, 2017. Gwendoline Christie can also be seen in the upcoming season of “Game of Thrones,” which lands on HBO Sunday, April 24, 2016.

    That’s good, cuz she wasn’t in ep.7

It’s good she’ll be back, because Captain Phasma was a bit of a disappointment. When you’re seven feet tall and you’re wearing the shiny armor, you’re supposed to have at least one fight scene. You can’t wear the big, shiny armor and *not* do something badass.

Hopefully she won’t immediately cave and betray her side, showing no backbone and raising a legitimate question for why she is a commander at all. Captain Phasma was really, really badly served by Episode 7.

My theory is that she has been a mole all along.

  • Tighelander

What other stories has the character been in?

  • Hypestyles

For all of the fempowerment that was hinted at with her character in the months leading up to the film, Phasma’s pragmatic relevance to the plot was somewhat superfluous.

Boba Fett looked great too and didn’t do anything cool except fall into a giant sand vagina.

Exactly! What WAS the point of her character being in the film?!?!?

Just so JJ and the casting director could fill the quote requirement for seven-foot tall female Stormtrooper commanders?

  • Master Bumscratch

I think that would be the only way to salvage the character, other than a retcon. Well, maybe…

It’s not an exclusive. She was confirmed to be back for VIII ages ago.

  • Pohatu5

As little as she did and as underwhelming as it was, I’m not convinced she’ll be better in the next one.

  • JasonMBryant

    That’s a perfect example!

Boba Fett looked awesome. He didn’t get to do much in the movies. Then there was massive fan outcry leading to tons of action for Boba Fett in comics, books, and other spin offs after the movies.
