Maisie Williams Says She’d Star on ‘Doctor Who,’ if Idris Elba Doesn’t Want Role

“Game of Thrones” star Maisie Williams concedes it would be “cool” to replace Peter Capaldi as the Doctor, but only if Idris Elba doesn’t step into the TARDIS first.

“Yes, it would be cool,” the 18-year-old actress told The Evening Standard, “but right now I’m locked into some other things. I think a female Doctor would be incredible.”

“I think a black Doctor would be incredible,” Williams added. ” I’m all for Idris Elba – but if not, I’ll take it for the team and do it!”

Even before executive producer Steven Moffat officially announced his departure from “Doctor Who,” star Capaldi had hinted the next season of could be his last as the Time Lord. While there’s already been speculation as to who might become the Thirteenth Doctor, it will undoubtedly be quite a while before any announcement is made: Aside from the Christmas special, there won’t be any new “Who” episodes this year. Moffat’s 12-episode final season will debut in 2017.

Williams is, of course, no stranger to the TARDIS, having already appeared on four episodes of the long-running sci-fi series.

Is there some new rule that Idris Elba has to be offered everything first?

  • demoncat_4

Good lord, enough with the Doctor must be black or a woman or “trans” or this or that. The character is a white male. End of story. There is nothing wrong with that. It is not an insult to all other races. It’s just simply a fact. Tell you what, let’s recast Kunta Kinte with a white woman for a Roots remake. How about that?

  • David Eckard

They said that sometimes the Doctor can change into someone he’s met as the current doctor is the man from Pompeii.

  • stella star

No sorry no female Doctor no black Doctor, Idris can be a great James Bond, but the Doctor no. The Doctor is a white male end of story.

Just because a lot of us love and revere Game of Thrones doesn’t mean we’ll take any actor from the show and be thrilled. Please Dr. Who fans aren’t desperate. And we certainly wouldn’t accept a child actor from that show. I’m not even sure i’d want her as a companion let alone the Doctor. “I’ll step in if Elba doesn’t” as if she was even offered or if anyone even wanted her. Get over yourself child, you are a nothing on GoT.

  • Drew Pierce

He also doesn’t fit the mold. Elba is more of an action star or superhero, he’s like 6’2″ 230 of muscle, the Doctor needs to be a skinny frail white guy …

  • Doogeruoy Sihtdaer

I would be okay with either Idris Elba or Maisie as the new doctor.

  • Optimistic-Cynic

Can you back up your position with rational facts and evidence?

  • Optimistic-Cynic

I think you might misunderstand her humor there….it was probably supposed to come off as self-mocking arrogance…
Also – watch the movie Gold, she’s really good in that. Not saying she’d make a good Doctor, but she’s not just “a child actor”

  • Doodlee Pigvirus

i’m on board. she’d make an amazing doctor.

  • Queefer Sutherland

Now I’m really hoping she gets the gig.

I know what you mean. It should be Nicholas Cage instead.

  • Queefer Sutherland

WHY THE HELL NOT?!?!? DO IT!!!

  • dad123

the Doctor isnt human,he can be whatever.

  • Optimistic-Cynic

And, the Doctor’s history as a white male does what for the story in the same way that Kunta Kinte as a black man is integral TO the story?

  • stella star

No , I do not have any rational facts or evidence, this is just my humble opinion, I do not watch any James Bond movies so I really do not care who’s the new James Bond is, but the Doctor is a great show and I have been watching it since I was about 9, so I do care a lot, and I’m sorry but my wish is to keep the Doctor a male, and white. Anyway , mine and your little and insignificant opinions will not influence any decision that the BBC makes, is actually out of our hands.

  • Optimistic-Cynic

Well, I agree with your final point there – our opinions won’t sway anything :)
Just a thought, though: The Doctor is an alien. From another world. Both the concept of “male” and “white” might actually be wildly inaccurate for him, as those are human-based classifications. Much as The Master became a “female” during one of the regeneration times, Time Lords can likely be anything they want.

Um.. No! While I think Idris Elba is a solid actor, I don’t think he’d be a good Doctor. I also agree with the whole “white male” (as opposed as to “white female”) for the Doctor. I mean, it’s bad enough those of the WHO fandom community who choose to watch NotWHO have accepted a female Master, but a female Doctor would be the final nail in the coffin. Ah well, I still think Cilian Murphy would make a fab Doctor, but I don’t know that he would be interested in the role. Also, I think Arthur Darvill (Rory) would make an equal fab Doctor, as seen in the way Rip Hunter is being written on the CW’s ‘Legends of Tomorrow’. But, yeah, to restate my opinion, NO and NO to both Idris Elba or Maisie Williams potential candidates for when Capaldi leaves!

  • http://barkingschnauzer.net/ Spacedog2k5

Yeah, but the way he’s playing Rip Hunter, as well as the way the character is being portrayed, it gives us a good look at what a “Rory” Doctor could be. #hopeful

I’d give up my entire comic collection to see Robert DeNiro as Uncle Remus in the reboot of Disney’s ‘Song of the South’! Just sayin’..
