‘The X-Files’ Finale Leaves Fans Asking, ‘Was That Really the End?’

After five weeks of build-up, the season 10 revival of “The X-Files” came to a conclusion tonight. Many fans and critics speculated that the mini-revival would lead into a full series order, possibly for an eleventh season, but so far Fox has been quiet on the subject.

Tonight’s episode, “My Struggle II,” picked up where “My Struggle” started: with the threat of an alien virus, questions about Scully’s DNA, and the return of the Smoking Man. While the world fell prey to an incurable virus, Agents Einstein and Scully worked to find a cure.

The episode also continued to ask the question, “Where is William?” Mulder and Scully’s son never made an appearance this season, despite wide speculation that this season would draw that mystery to a close.

The final moments of the episode reunited Mulder and Scully, as Scully attempted to cure him. Moments later they were eclipsed by a UFO and the episode was over, leaving audiences asking, “Wait, was that it? No conclusion? No resolution? No William?”

Either Fox is going to announce a new series very soon, or that was the shortest and most hyped television revival in history.

I just wasn’t impressed with the return. Some episodes felt like the x-files, while others just left me feeling violated.

    Sorry you had that experience

Well, let’s put it back in the closet. Sure it was years ago since I last saw the final X-Files episodes, but whatever it was that has come back now wasn’t what I was watching back then. It was like water with the taste of wisky, instead of wisky with the taste of wisky.
…but who am I kidding. It’ll get revived again and again and again…

It was a mixed bag, this miniseries, and I felt like the mythology episodes oversimplified the running alien plotline to the point that it negated much of what had come before, which, while a bit of a mess itself, deserved more than the cruel handwaving of, “It was never about alien colonization.” It came off as throwing the baby out with the bathwater. And I don’t think Chris Carter realizes that just daisychaining modern conspiracy theories like chemtrails and vaccinations with alien abductions and DNA resequencing isn’t going to be enough. The problem is that today we have some very scary people who actually BELIEVE chemtrail conspiracies and that the Large Hadron Collider is a gateway to demons, that the Illumanati wants to install a New World Order of lizardmen, and the like, and playing it up for these storylines gives kooks validation. Not to mention it just makes the mythology even messier because it feels like Carter is just using it as a Conspiracy Mad Libs. The chemistry is still there, the premise still works for the most part, but it feels like the writers are sleepwalking through this for another paycheck, and not because they have new avenues to go down, creatively.

I would possibly watch more if this continues into another series, but this one sets the bar pretty low. Don’t just do the X-Files to have more X-Files.

I will not be watching if they go to a full series and have Mulder and Scully pull half duty with Mulder and Scully v2.0 filling the remainder of the season. Those two are derivative and just terrible

But I agree, Chris Carter needs to get out of his own way. His eps were by far the worst

And they should have started a totally new conspiracy rather then convoluting the old one. They basically realized they had taken the old plot as far as it could go and to further it, basically had to say it was all a lie for some other deeper conspiracy.

Just start over using more contemporary themes which are very apt in this day and age

    I agree.

Chris Carter needs to step away. His eps were awful

But the others were fantastic, particularly the Horny Toad one. Classic

So what I took from the cliff hanger was that William (their son) has the coolest ride of any teenager and came to save his dad from the impending plague
