Sarah Michelle Gellar Will Be Back for NBC’s ‘Cruel Intentions’

Late last fall, NBC announced that they would be shooting a pilot for a new series based on the 1999 millennial hit film, “Cruel Intentions.” While the series will focus on a new batch of corruptible youth, original lead actress Sarah Michelle Gellar announced today that she would be back for the pilot.

Speculation on Gellar’s return has been buzzing, and the actress confirmed her role reprisal today on Instagram, by posing the with “Cruel Intentions” current and former producers Roger Kumble and Neal Moritz.

According the The Hollywood Reporter, the series will, “Pick up more than 15 years after the 1999 movie left off. The drama follows the beautiful and cunning Kathryn Merteuil (Gellar) as she vies for control of Valmont International as well as the soul of Bash Casey (Taylor John Smith), son of her brother, the late Sebastian Valmont, and Annette Hargrove. Upon discovering his late father’s legacy in a hidden journal, Bash is introduced to a world of sex, money, power and corruption he never could have imagined.”

The pilot production is underway now. If the pilot gets picked up for a full series, it’s likely NBC will make the announcement this May at their Upfronts presentation.

wow, seriously? A sequel? Trippy. What about Reese Witherspoon?

Actually, the movie had TWO sequels already. Well, sorta. “Cruel Intentions 2″ (2000) was actually a prequel with Amy Adams in the SMG role. “Cruel intentions 3″ (2004) was some direct to DVD movie that didn’t directly follow up the 1999 movie. This pilot, should it become a show will probably ignore both movies.

As for Reese Witherspoon, her career really doesn’t need this show. SMG does. “Ringer” (2011) was a whole lot of soapy, cheesy fun, but that only lasted one season. “The Crazy Ones” (2013) was also a solid dramedy, but that got canned after the first season too; Robin Williams’ death would have made a 2nd season impossible anyway.

When you look at her post-Buffy career compared to the likes of David Boreanaz or Alyson Hannigan, it’s pretty clear that SMG needs a win. She’s more or less been reduced to voice over work in recent years.

Wow!!! I love “Cruel Intentions” when I was 17 and I think it could be a great show. Sarah Michelle Gellar was an amazing Kathryn Marteuil and i can’t wait to watch her again on Tv screen!

Read my post again, Fox. I absolutely DID mention that #2 was a prequel and that #3 was a spin-off.

As for SMG in acting I never said that she sucked. All I said was that her post-Buffy CAREER did. Some of her co-stars fared much better.

Did you even read my post?

I like the movie (forget the sequels). I like Gellar and she was awesome as the super evil sexy bitch. That said, I’m not excited about a series. I will probably watch the first episode just to check it out.
