LOOK: Lionsgate’s ‘Power Rangers’ Assemble in First Cast Photo

It’s almost morphin’ time, “Power Rangers” fans! The stars of Lionsgates’ “Power Rangers” film have joined forces in a new first-look cast photo of the five main characters.

“From the very beginning, diversity was a very important part of the whole process,” director Dean Israelite told Entertainment Weekly. “We switched all of the races around, but we made sure that the essence of each of those characters are who they were in the original show, and this really will be an origin story of those characters.”

Though the photo doesn’t show the cast in their Power Rangers costumes, Israelite promises that they’ll be “really modern, edgy, [and] badass,” saying, “We’ve really pushed ourselves to make them feel different from any other superhero costume that’s out there… One key that’s different to the Power Ranger suits is that they’re not really suits that people get into. They’re suits that morph onto our kids, so they already have this almost metaphysical quality to them.”

The original 1993 television series “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” followed teenagers Jason, Kimberly, Trini, Billy and Zack, who were chosen by the ancient being Zordon to defend Earth from attack against the forces of Rita Repulsa.

Directed by Dean Israelite and starring Dacre Montgomery as the Red RangerNaomi Scott as the Pink RangerLudi Lin as the Black RangerR.J. Cyler as the Blue Ranger and Becky Gomez as the Yellow Ranger, “Power Rangers” morphs into theaters Jan. 13, 2017.

They sure got the “kids with attitude” down pat by the looks of their faces.

The nostalgia is really getting to me. Transformers and Turtles were before my time, but the Rangers were my jam as a kid.

As I figured, Black guy in a movie with a majority of the cast being white, make him the nerdy one. Look at the rest of them, all typically good looking athletically built young people but the black guy, nope, he has to be most unoffensive looking one for our white audience, might as well give him the Urkle glasses and low-top fade. He even looks kid of like Jaleel White.

Ludi Lin is Chinese Canadian and Becky Gomez is Mexican American. So how is 2/5 a majority?
And so what if the black guy is the nerdy one? I know black nerds…if it was the other way around they would be accused of stereotyping.

damn Kimberly and Trini are hotter than ever

    Yeah… No.

I suppose they could have made him the typical black athlete, how about that? Or maybe he’s the token comedy guy? You know, you always need one funny black guy among the mostly white peers right? Or maybe he could just play the angry black dude, the one that is all about being real. Get out of here man, no matter what they do with him, there’s always going to be people like you.

    Absolutely terrible.

And also Naomi Scott is half-indian. So the ratio is actually 4/5.

  • Jason Todd

    Where’s Tommy?

  • Alfredo Wilson

And how does he look nerdy? He’s just as stylishly dressed as the rest of them. Are you implying he needs to be dressed like he’s about to star in a hip hip video to not be nerdy?

  • Alfredo Wilson

You should try the comic. It just started but it seems like it’s going to be a more thoughtful take on the series.

  • JahiRa

Or he could just be like the original black ranger. This movie is based off the original.

Tommy wasn’t an original, he was added later.

Who knows? Maybe he will be a background character that goes missing during the movie. Then the end credits show he is being brain wash by Rita.

Or maybe the promotional material is just about the five rangers (like the first season of MMPR), but then by the end of the movie there are the original six rangers.

Either way, love Tommy, and I think the movies will have to introduce at some point.

Did I bring up their race? I pointed out the target audience race, and pointed out the all the other kids are “good looking athletically built except the black guy.” don’t go rearranging the issue that I brought up to hype some unintended agenda. RJ Cyke was type casted because black actors only fall into 3 categories as of late, and he’s definitely playing one of them. There was absolutely no need to make him the obvious nerd/brain of the group, had they gotten any other black male of similar stature as the others “good looking, athletically built,” that person to could have played a brain while still fitting very much into group.. even looking at the original Mighty Morphin team, Billy was not the “Nerdy” looking guy, he was still presented as a good looking “White Male” with fashionable if not suitable clothing and had a athletic built despite trying to hide it under baggy clothing. This is more typical Hollywood type casting in order to fuel and demeaning agenda toward black actors and viewers and no one can tell me others because the proof is in the casting portrayal of of RJ’s character.

  • Red_Five_Standing_By

So the funny black guy with funk?

  • Red_Five_Standing_By

The only way ou get around it is by including more than one black person in the film. Even if s/he isn’t apart of the principle cast, it will still go a long way to quelling such talk.

  • Red_Five_Standing_By

He’s wearing a non-flannel collared shirt. His jacket may as well have patches on the elbows and be made of tweed.

He is the least cool of the group.

Still nerd chic but still a nerd.

  • jayded1

Holy shit you just can’t please some people. if he had been “cool” you would have whined about him fitting some kind of cool black stereotype. If he had been the funny one you would have whined about the black guy being the comic relief. They make the smart one and you whine, unreal. Maybe you should ask yourself why you take offence to a black character being the smartest in a group.

  • ReverendShaggy

You did bring up the race by saying the black guy was cast as the Nerd. This is like being upset because he was cast how you wanted him to be. The are all martial artists so he is fit athletically. I don;t see the point of your argument. Me personally they all look like modern nerdy fashion trends. I mean it seems you are upset that he appears to be playing the intelligent one in this take. That is just weird.

  • Ranger Fan

Why not show them wearing their respective ranger’s colors?

  • Nate Reid

You’ve apparently never watched Power Rangers before….

  • Sarcasm Detected

Yeah, you did bring up the race of the cast. It was in the first sentence…
And again I’ll ask why is it bad for him to be the nerd, even if he is? There’s nothing bad looking about him. If you’re going by his outfit, that speaks more towards your own prejudices about the way different types of people dress. And not all “athletic builds” are the same…a football player can look much different than a tennis player. Hell, a QB will look different than a linebacker.
Oh and yes, Billy was absolutely a “nerdy” looking guy. Honestly in the 90s all he needed to look nerdy was the glasses, and he was surrounded by other “good looking athletically built” teens. And in at least the first season Billy wasn’t even a good fighter until he morphed (god, i’m over 30 and yet I still said that…)
Look, it doesn’t matter. The cast is more diverse than the original and it seems like this time they aren’t making the black guy the Black Ranger. That should at least count for something.
