Mark Hamill Says Luke Skywalker Could Be Gay, if Fans Believe He is

Following director J.J. Abrams’ recent call for the introduction of gay characters in the “Star Wars” films, franchise veteran Mark Hamill has reiterated his own assertion that Luke Skywalker’s sexuality remains an open question.

“In the old days you would get fan mail,” Hamill told The Sun. “But now fans are writing and ask all these questions, ‘I’m bullied in school … I’m afraid to come out.’ They say to me, ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer. If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves.”

That echoes his response in January to a fan who asked whether Luke is bisexual. “Luke is whatever the audience wants him to be,” the 64-year-old actor wrote in a direct message, “so you can decide for yourself.”

Addressing the press last month at the U.S.-Ireland Alliance Oscar Wilde Awards, Abrams said, “When I talk about inclusivity, it’s not excluding gay characters, it’s about inclusivity. To me, the fun of ‘Star Wars’ is exploring the possibilities, so it seems insanely narrow-minded to say that there wouldn’t be a homosexual character in that world.”

Hamill returns as Luke Skywalker in director Rian Johnson’s “Star Wars: Episode VIII,” which opens Dec. 15, 2017.

Judge someone based on character, eff yeah.

  • NoFace

Fuck it, lets just make every character gay

  • Psimitar

Judge someone by the content of their character? That’s outdated notion that ended in the 60’s. Humanity has demonstrated that they don’t have the capacity to do that. We have to slap a label on everyone so we can sort them by like label then hate every other label that’s not ours.

Hell yeah. Considering how just about every Star Wars character of that prominence has had their sexuality pretty definitively asserted, it’s really remarkable that Luke’s only “romantic chemistry” in the official canon is some childlike, sexless flirtation with his *sister.* I don’t expect him to ever be officially defined as gay, I just think it would be awesome if he made it through the whole saga without having a romantic plot at all; it’d be a total anomaly among movie heroes. (Sorry, Mara Jade fans!)

Or, they could just leave well enough alone! Does star wars really need a “gay character” to appeal to gays? Can’t a person just enjoy a movie without having to identify to every specific character? Enough with this crap already!

i’ve always thought he seemed aesexual, but gay would work, too. go for it, Disney!

Go reread the Hero’s Journey. Luke did make it through the saga without a romantic plot. He’s now the blind old man.

I’m willing to bet in the next movie we learned he was a dad and he was married and that will be the end of that discussion.

The hateful comments left by some people whenever this sort of thing comes up says a lot about their own character.

Of course it doesn’t need a gay character to appeal to gays. I’m a lesbian, and I enjoy Star Wars movies just fine. However, if the addition of a gay character would lessen someone else’s enjoyment, then that’s very sad.

    Okay!

Yeah, I get more asexual vibes from him than anything else.

To over-represent a minority to the extent that it is considered ubiquitous is where the real hate is. These people use this sort of propaganda and indirectly the gay minority to further their radical agenda.

He’s saying that you can believe what ever you want to believe. Like, for example, That the LGBTQ community is more than 1 percent of the population. Or that L, B, T’s or Q’s even exist outside of somepeoples imagination.

I had no idea an L like me is imaginary.

  • Gh Hoigh

Women don’t get to decide their sexuality.

  • http://picklepuss57.tumblr.com/ Picklepuss Dill

I’ve never hated anyone for being heterosexual, but I have experienced real hatred from people who hate homosexuals. So if I had a radical agenda, it would be for people to stop being negative and to accept one another’s differences. You know, the usual “love and peace” stuff that fell out of fashion a long time ago.

I may regret asking this, but would you care to explain?

  • Derek Metaltron

Glad this will all be made irrelevant when he turns out to be Rey’s dad and her mother is the lead from Rogue One. Make a new character with such qualities rather than forcing it into established ones, or it does look forced for all the wrong reasons.

  • Gh Hoigh

It’s all just in your head.

  • jdb1972

I think he’s hetero, but he self-identifies as black and female, so there’s that.

  • JT

I believe Luke is straight. So, he’s straight.

Hollywood: Everybody is Gay now. Luke, The Head Master in Harry Potter. This is so pathetic. Hollywood doesn’t do that for any well-meaning thoughts, they do it to protect themselves in case something big happen against Hollywood a la Bryan Singer. Kids are not bullied at school cause they are gays. Kids are bullied at school cause the media and Hollywood want to force the issue so much that Families want to protect themselves and becoming even more fearful of homosexuality and their kids become conditioned to reject them even more. Cause it becomes a paranoia.

There hasn’t been one gay character in the entire Star Wars universe, at least not the movies. That’s over-representation?

So is your supposed straightness all in your head as well?

  • http://picklepuss57.tumblr.com/ Picklepuss Dill

If that were so, then gay kids — or straight kids who were presumed to be gay — would only have been bullied and ostracized within the last 20 years or so. Surely you realize that’s not true at all.

Again, why does anyone’s sexuality matter in the Star Wars Universe? The film’s are not about sexuality, they are about action/adventure, they are sci-fi and fantasy. Sex/sexuality of any kind is not needed to define characters or setup situations in these films. Every film, tv show and story has to be flooded with a statement of some sort, with a political agenda. Just make the movie and leave the BS pandering out of it.
