Last night’s Academy Awards ceremony was a story of upset and redemption, as Life of Pi‘s Ang Lee beat out early favorite Steven Spielberg for best director, and Ben Affleck, long the butt of jokes for his work in front of the camera, accepted the trophy for best picture of Argo.
Although Les Misérables and Showtime’s Homeland led the 70th annual Golden Globe Awards with three wins each, the night belonged to Argo director Ben Affleck and hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
With nominations in 12 categories, including best picture and best director, Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln leads the list of contenders for the 85th Academy Awards. The winners will be announced Feb. 24.
Les Misérables and Django Unchained, both of which opened on Christmas, dominated the holiday box office in North America, earning a combined $33.5 million.
At CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Universal Pictures teased its film slate all the way into summer 2013, with previews of Snow White and the Huntsman, The Bourne Legacy, R.I.P.D. and much more.
After several weeks of speculation, star Hugh Jackman has confirmed that filming of The Wolverine won’t begin until next year, once he’s finished the big-screen adaptation of Les Misérables.
