That Joss Whedon is going to be co-creating a S.H.I.E.L.D. show for Marvel TV and ABC is an intriguing proposition, beyond the general excitement that comes from the idea of a new show from the man behind Buffy and Firefly, never mind the Avengers movie. Why so intriguing, you may ask? Well, because for once, Whedon is going to have to look at things from the point of view of the authorities.
That Joss Whedon has been signed by Disney/Marvel to write and direct Avengers 2 shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, given the outrageous success of the first one. But that he’s also going to create a “Marvel-based” series for ABC is the far more interesting news to come from Disney today – and the kind of thing that’s likely to drive speculation for quite some time to come.
If there’s one thing that a quick look at the current state of television and movies will tell you, it’s that there’s not much need for original ideas when there’s so much out there ready and waiting to be adapted, updated or just outright ripped off. One of the most interesting things about the news about Marvel TV’s first two series was the revelation of a list that was given by Marvel to ABC executives of possible series adapting Marvel concepts. Hulk and Cloak & Dagger got selected, but what about the other ones? To use a familiar Marvel refrain, U DECIDE!
The news that Marvel is making a television series out of The Incredible Hulk yet again is one of those strange things that, on the face of it, seems to be one thing, and then unfolds into something quite different altogether.
This week’s poll-that-isn’t-always-a-poll is a no-brainer: With Marvel announcing Jeph Loeb as their head of TV and talking about live-action programming for both ABC and ABC Family, what characters and/or stories would you want to see translated into television shows?
Wondering if Marvel would ever do anything with their new Disney connections to move onto the small screen? The answer may have come in the form of Jeph Loeb being announced as the company’s new Head of Television.
