That Joss Whedon is going to be co-creating a S.H.I.E.L.D. show for Marvel TV and ABC is an intriguing proposition, beyond the general excitement that comes from the idea of a new show from the man behind Buffy and Firefly, never mind the Avengers movie. Why so intriguing, you may ask? Well, because for once, Whedon is going to have to look at things from the point of view of the authorities.
That Joss Whedon has been signed by Disney/Marvel to write and direct Avengers 2 shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, given the outrageous success of the first one. But that he’s also going to create a “Marvel-based” series for ABC is the far more interesting news to come from Disney today – and the kind of thing that’s likely to drive speculation for quite some time to come.
If there’s one thing that a quick look at the current state of television and movies will tell you, it’s that there’s not much need for original ideas when there’s so much out there ready and waiting to be adapted, updated or just outright ripped off. We’re still a few days away from the official announcements of the networks’ fall schedules, but one thing is clear from the news that we’ve already heard: Genre television is essentially dead on mainstream networks, at least for the time being.
Here’s a piece of entirely wild, utterly uninformed speculation: I think we’re going to see some more movement for television shows based upon DC Comics properties very soon. Why, you wonder? Well, I’m glad you asked. Let me share my suspicions below the fold.
